I have been working at Avon Products as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Because you are an independent rep you make your own hours and how much your work/sell determines how much you can make. You don't have to punch a clock and worry about anyone looking over shoulder all the time.

    Cons

Getting rid of local regional managers that used to help new reps and relying on other reps to recruit and train and manage new reps. Push for reps to recruit. If you're not recruiting lots of new reps and spending tons of time managing their work you aren't very valued anymore. If I didn't like a number of their products i would have given up selling it already. Also the fact that you have tell customers they can return anything at any time, but reps pay the return postage fees and lose credit for sale etc. I am not that motivated anymore like I used to be.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Help do more to get reps to sell better and stop this stupid push to get reps to constantly recruit and manage a downline. 10 really good reps who sell a lot and keep at it are far better than 100 who sell just a little for a very short period of time than quit. Maintain parts of the reps website that you've let go such as product info section.

    Pros

Most associates in the rank and file are great to work with. The company values are meaningful.

    Cons

Upper management doesn't have a strategy. Too much time and money is spent atoning for sins of past upper management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop asking management consultants what to do. Look inside your collective hearts and create a plan for transformation. Then boldly follow that plan!

    Pros

You make your own hours work when you want.

    Cons

Its hard of youre not good with meeting new people and trying to sell the products. They sometimes charge you more than what is needed to cover your products leaving you with a credit balance when that's money that you could have had in your pocket. Take a big percentage.

    Pros

Some really great people to work with, pay OK

    Cons

The company slogan "The Company for Women" has resulted in too many unqualified and inexperienced women in various positions, especially management. On the other hand the men of the in-house Sopranos gang (anyone who has worked in Rye knows what this means) make IT decisions for reasons other than what is best for the company. My lasting impression is of the former CEO being a disciple of Jack Welch who preaches "cut till it shows", maybe that was good for GE but most companies cannot survive when the remaining workforce has one person doing what three used to... I'm not at all surprised at their troubles.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

Many of the District Sales Managers are committed to helping the representative be his or her best. The benefit package is quite nice with all forms of insurance, a fully funded company car, and the opportunity to earn nice bonuses.

    Cons

There is great pressure to work seven days a week in order to meet the expectations of "the plan". District Sales Managers have wonderful vacation benefits, but are often pressured to not take vacation or to actually work during the vacation to hit additions plan or order count plan. The base compensation is ok compared to what others make in a small town, but is half of what others make in similar positions for other companies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is a lack of honest communication from upper management. Many things are shared by upper management to independent representatives before being shared with District Managers. Of late, key details are shared with the press and never communicated to District Managers. The field management is often pressured or blamed for results even though there is lack of clarity of mission. Avon has lost touch with the representatives. The directive from the Division Manager is often to ignore most of the representatives and only work with the ones who will deliver additions. There are loyal traditional sellers who feel like they are undervalued.
