I had a lot of fun and the products sold themselves

Independent Sales Representative (Former Employee)
Hampton, VA

I worked at Avon Products part-time for more than 3 years

ProsLots of support, work at your own speed and pace, great discounts, ongoing training available

ConsLow profit margins. When I signed up for Avon, it was "under" any representative; I just came in off the street and signed up. I wasn't really interested in doing the whole "level" thing of recruiting people and bringing people in, I just wanted to get a discount on the products and sell to my friends. This worked great for a few years but then they assigned me to someone and that's when the pressure started. All of sudden I was being encouraged to trick people into coming to recruiting "parties" and because my sales were kinda high I was being called constantly trying to get me more into recruiting. It took all the fun out of it for me.

Advice to Senior ManagementI think Avon is a great company and it is what you make of it....I think management has been consistently on the right track. The cons that I listed above were personal to me; overall I think its a great company to work for and you can have tremendous potential.

They built a house without building the foundation; company in midst of transition though

Global Marketing Manager (Former Employee)
New York, NY

I worked at Avon Products full-time for more than 3 years

ProsI worked in global marketing and believe the culture at Avon is the biggest pro -- people are genuinely nice, smart, hardworking but fun, and I created a lot of true friendships during my time working there. The quality of product development is quite good, and the pace of innovation means you get a ton of experience quickly across a lot of products and a lot of creative development. The global experience is also very strong -- there are no other NY based beauty companies with the majority of their business being sold in countries like Brazil & Russia. It's an iconic brand to work on and has an incredible global heritage.

ConsThe company grew so quickly under Andrea Jung's leadership, but a foundation was never built to carry the larger size. Despite being a $13B company it is still run as an entrepreneurial venture in a lot of ways. The pace of innovation and the ability to launch or discontinue items at any time (unlike the two sales windows available with mainstream US retailers) sets the stage for a lack of commitment to launches, which means swirl and rework ongoing. During my four years there the level of decision making that happened within mid/low levels vs senior management differed based on my manager at the time, so I don't think there's consistency there. Beyond some of these operational issues, obviously there are barriers to direct selling being a successful business model in western markets in general. Big hill to overcome. With all that said, there is new leadership running the company over the last 1 1/2-2 years and I have hope that they will force positive change.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on your core high margin, profitable products and drop the gimmicks (cheap fashion, halloween decorations, generic tupperware, etc); along with that you may be able to drop your lowest performing sales representatives and increase company value and customer service.

A legacy company with great people to work with.

Sales Manager (Former Employee)

I worked at Avon Products full-time for more than 10 years

ProsGood people that care about one another.
Great products.

ConsStruggling financially.
Direct selling good but speed of delivery is being hurt by web sales.
Old systems not able to keep up with new technology.

Advice to Senior ManagementUpgrade systems. You can't kept cutting costs to become profitable. At some point need to bring in sales to get growth. Stop tying the hands of sales force and changing their priorities every week.

Good Company with Great Products

Administrative Assistant (Current Employee)

I have been working at Avon Products part-time for less than a year

ProsGreat products, good people, nice concept, flexibility, work from home opportunities, decent incentives, just introduced new incentive plans that may make the cons irrelevant, excellent division manager.

ConsSome positions work 50 to 60 hours per week, lots of stress and pressure to perform, large company where sometimes the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing, hard to get timely answers if you don't know who to ask.

Advice to Senior ManagementReally listen to the people at the bottom since they will make or break your business, focus more on keeping the reps that you have and helping them build their businesses (which will help you grow).

Independant Sales Rep

Independent Sales Representative (Current Employee)
Longwood, FL

I have been working at Avon Products part-time for more than 10 years

ProsIndependant--not expected to sell any set amount--not expected to "keep stock" on hand, they want customers to have fresh product. Everything guaranteed 100% money back if not happy.
Low cost to join-$10.00--was $25.00 when I joined--25 years ago. oppurtunity to earn as much as you want and save money on your own items. Earn more money thru leadership-not a pyamid...but hard to keep reps-very few are highly successful with this. Meet certain sales levels and get rewards- yearly luncheon and maybe earn trips---with BIG sales

ConsI had a great dist mgr for 20 yrs--but she retired-replacements have been disappointing-went without one for a year. If you return alot of items, your on no instant credit-not fair with clothing items. I have to pay for returns, that I made no money on. Dist mgrs jobs are to recruit-recruit-recruit-instead of focusing on retention and motivating existing reps. needs balance. Basically--you are sink or swim. Business's should not be in the same catagory as reps who sell to family and friends....they win all the contests.

Advice to Senior ManagementNot enough motivation anymore-25 year rep leaving dec 31st. I know other 25 year reps leaving too. sad-I used to be a stock holder-I've been to all conventions thru the years, pres club EVERY year-honor society a few years. Dist Mgmt gave recruits to favorites, other reps de-motivated by this. Spoke and wrote to upper mgmt-nothing changed for 2 years, then someone realized what we had been telling them and let her go-but the damage had been done. Mgmt focused on recruiting and not on retention-meet quota or they let them go-districts have lost focus on current reps. Cut $$ for meetings-- Not fun anymore-doesn't feel like a "family" anymore. My mother passed away, and other than my "avon friends", no one in mgmt called-sent a card or even acknowledged my loss..... I am just a number--22894-781. When I leave, I don't expect anyone to care or contact me---I was just a number. Sad after 25 years. One last comment----the trips and prizes and recognition usually goes to business's, instead of the "door to door" rep---extremely de-motivating. Now that avon sells clothes and shoes, no instant credit based on your returns is un-fair---I'm not on nic, but I know several who were and we can't control if clothes fit or shoes fit, as long as we actually return items-it should NOT count against us. I have to pay for returns on items I made no money on.

It was a good experience of selling and education.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Avon Products

ProsIndividual freedom, financial freedom, can make own hours, choose the people you do business with, good education, good support and marketing materials.

Consno support in gaining customer base at start, percent of sale commission is slightly low, not a lot of personal support. You are on your own and thrown in when starting out. Takes a lot of time to gain customer base by phone calls and brochure materials.

Advice to Senior Managementgive personal education off the bat. Give more support when starting out.
