Nice People Everywhere at the task level. Poor/No Leadership. Bad/Insincere Communications from management.

    Senior Specialty Engineer (Current Employee)

ProsBenefits are good. Pay is above average.

ConsLittle to no opportunity for promotion as too many people are ahead of you and are going no where fast. All promotions seniority based, if there are any at all. Most times, they are shuffling around mid-level managers that should have been fired as incompetent/ineffective long ago.

Advice to Senior ManagementI have no idea how to fix the problems I see. I think it is just cultural. I will continue to actively look for work elsewhere.

Read carefully before considering working here

    Tech Authority (Current Employee)

    ProsGood benefits and pension scheme.
Reasonable canteen food at most sites.
Reasonable line managers and project managers.
    Standard 8-to-5 work hours.
A good place to end your career rather than start one.

ConsVery little empowerment of employees. Software engineers have far more responsibilities at other technology/enginerring companies.
Little opportunity to move into different roles unless you want to move to a different site. Some people have been in the same job for more than 9 years and should move to another project, except that management can't find any suitable replacements.
Software tools are slow and ancient. Technology used is at least 10 years old (5 years if you're lucky).

Advice to Senior ManagementGet rid of some sites that are not cost-effective to run. Ensure that the most profitable sites get the right type of work.

    Solid engineering/technology company

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

Pros- Recognition for good work and hard work.
    - Good company pension scheme.
    - Excellent work/life balance.
    - Some excellent managers/leaders at the very top.
    - Very good communication of management/company objectives.

Cons- Benefits vary too much from site to site.
    - Suffers too much from brain drain - need to recruit and retain good enginners.
    - Security policies stifle innovation, conflict with business agility and have too much negative impact on productivity.
    - Some very average managers/leaders at the top who move from role to role doing very little.

Advice to Senior Management- Do not assume that process improvement will fix everything - your people are your assets.
    - Documentation is not a substitute for expertise/experience.
    - Employ better business development managers to bring in business, but also recognise that you need better engineers to avoid project overruns and to deliver high quality products.
    - Your line managers and middle managers do not adequately implement policies from higher up.
    - Motivate engineers to conform to the high performance culture . There are too many 9-5ers who turn up to get paid.

Stimulating and varied work. Obstructive processes.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsInteresting work. Very varied, lots of opportunities for challenge, travel and career. Some leading technology, staff commitment.

ConsProcess often prevents work being followed to my satisfaction (and others).
Judgment by targets has frequent unforseen (though entirely forseeable) negative side-effects.
Employees are trained in ethics, but the board has failed to explain the new evidence which changed the company stance from 'no wrongdoing' to accepting wrongdoing overnight in early 2010.

Advice to Senior ManagementTarget culture. Beware of inadvertently suppressing innovation and invention!
    Ethics. Lead by example.
Process - isn't reduced by adding more process.

    Cleared Engineer? Look elsewhere.

    Chief Computer Monkey (Former Employee)

ProsThe paycheck, decent benefits, mostly friendly coworkers.

ConsHorrible management (if you can call it that) and more interest in filling contracts than making sure the employee is a fit for the position.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet your act together!

    Time for change

Software Engineer II (Current Employee) Warton, Lancashire, Lancashire, North West England, England (UK)

ProsRelaxed atmosphere, work can be varied, nice people in the main, job for life, no blame culture, long time scales, no pressure, if you are intelligent and competent you will probably find that you outperform most people working there easily with little effort. If you are a waster you will not be at any disadvantage. Annual inflation linked salary increases. Good pension package.

ConsI can't speak for the entire company because it is massive so my comments should be read as applying to my experience of working as a software engineer in 3 different departments in MAS (Military Air Solutions).

Software is developed and maintained in a very unprofessional manner. Everything is done on the cheap. Senior managers have the point of view that BAE don't develop software and appear to be in denial. Requirements capture, config management, testing, code reviews and practicaly every aspect of software development is done in a very hit and miss ad-hoc fashion. There are way too many incompetent staff, and at present they can easily hide and get away with shoddy work practically unnoticed by managers. Everything is done via word documents and email; we have bought into methadologies and toolsets like Rational in the past but they were never implemented properly and were scrapped.

Probably because these is no proper organisational structure or framework for software development there are very limited career opportunities and no specialisations. What we have is a pool of general software engineers who are jack of all trades. Rewards for good work are practically none existant. If you are lucky enough to be acknowledged as highly compentent and ahead of your peers you will still get nothing in way of financial reward. The good staff get ground down and either quit or eventually give up trying to make a difference or making any real effort. There is no vaguely quantitative method for measuring an individual's performance and performance reviews are at best based on managers subjective impressions. Managers often have no IT background. Pay is above average for the North of England but is very low compared to similar jobs in other companies. Secretaries and basic admin staff will often earn more than highly skilled developers and have far better career prospects.

Advice to Senior ManagementImplement proper departmental structures, methodologies and bring in the talent needed to do things properly. You may need to pay decent salaries but it will cost you less in the long run when IT projects suddenly start running to time and budget and you end up with products and systems that ACTUALLY WORK rather than ones which are still needing fixing and constant attention years after their delivery date.

Is being run in to the ground

Manufacturing Engineer (Current Employee) Glascoed, Wales (UK)

ProsLarge company with good financial record, which will look good on CV. The work is there if you look for it, and you can take a large responsibility from an early stage.
    They won't fire anyone.

ConsAncient site, ancient staff. It really is stuck in the old times with most employees sitting waiting for retirement. THis leaves so many jobsworths it's hardly worth attempting anything. Most work is spent fighting employees and is completely unproductive. Opportunities are not as advertised; transfer between sites or business units is almost impossible (unlike advertised) and the salary is far less than other BAE business units.
    They won't fire anyone.

Advice to Senior ManagementClose the gap between 'them' and 'us'. Whilst we're working in terrible conditions with poor salaries they're wining and dining any Saudi in sight. It's a degrading business.
