Great Place to work for a Commercial Bank

Various (Current Employee)
Norfolk, VA

I have been working at BB&T full-time for more than 10 years

ProsBB&T now has all the advantages of a large commercial bank while still trying to maintain a community bank reputation.

ConsBB&T now has many of the disadvantages of a large commerical bank and is quickly losing that personal feel that has always been it's main calling card and primary advantage in the market place.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou have teams of associates that are perfectly willing to work their hearts and bodies to the bone "to produce more with less" assistance because the recent economy has made things more difficult for all businesses. They are more than willing to sacrifice whatever it takes to help BB&T weather any storm and shine as the "best of the best" They have trouble buying into this logic for downsizing departments and eliminating positions when Senior Management is awarded massive extra bonuses for saving the bank so much money. Those bonuses could have been better used to keep the existing workforce fully engaged. Senior Management needs to be more sensitive to the associates' feelings when they are losing regional employees to increase productivity and cut costs but are then told of Senior Management's massive extra rewards for "saving" the bank money and increasing the dividends for stock holders and are then told of vacation homes and lavish lifestyles those bonuses finance. It makes it difficult to justify the eliminations and cost cutting when there is that much extra $$$$ to award. Sadly, it is becoming difficult to equate the BB&T Core Values with the organization as it is now evolving. There is a great senior team in place. They need to pay attention to the mixed message they are sending to the associates outside of Corporate Headquaters.

Lots of Opportunity

Teller (Current Employee)
Savannah, GA

I have been working at BB&T part-time for more than a year

ProsStrong Company, Fair and Equitable. Willing to work with my college schedule.

ConsThey drag their feet making hiring or promotion decisions.
They also don't seem very excited to move employees up unless you push.

Advice to Senior ManagementEducate all employees on all products so that all associates are able to talk about and cross sell products.

Very good, but could be better

Teller (Current Employee)
Charlottesville, VA

I have been working at BB&T part-time for more than a year

ProsGood pay and part timers get benefits also. Most of the people you run into are friendly and helpful.

ConsToo many politics. WAY too much gossip and rumors. Tend to understaff leaving only a couple people to handle a large load sometimes.

Truly a great company that provides benefits, opportunities, and develop their employees

Financial Center Leader II (Former Employee)
Hampton, VA

I worked at BB&T full-time for more than 5 years

Pros*Ability to move up in the company
*Managers do try to coach and develop employees to perform at optimum level
*great benefits, pension, and 401k

Cons*In the branches it is highly sales focused and some employees are not sales driven
*Could be a lot more personal recognition to reward employees
*So many branches in a market but everyone is competing for the small customer
*A lot of call nights/conferences to make weekly hours easily over 50+ hours and Saturday's

Advice to Senior ManagementI think that management really does try and focus on each employee.

BB&T is a great company with high standards.

Teller (Current Employee)
DFW, TX

I have been working at BB&T part-time for less than a year

ProsBB&T pays well, and offers continuing training and education. They also offer benefits to part time employees.

ConsBranches are staffed too lean making it difficult for the RB's, RT's, and FCL's to market the bank and its services. Being too lean also doesn't promote client confidence.

Advice to Senior ManagementI have not worked at BB&T long enough to have interacted with upper management much, but I would suggest updating the outdated cumbersome teller system. It has too many steps and makes transactions take too long.

Excellent company overall

Relationship Teller (Former Employee)
Charleston, WV

I worked at BB&T full-time for more than 3 years

ProsBB&T offers their employees exceptional benefits, with many opportunities to move up. They are value driven, and want to keep their employees and clients as happy as possible. I had a great experience working for them.

ConsIt's a big corporation, which can be a negative for some people. They are out for the benefit of the company, and if you don't want to work, they will find someone who will. Not really a negative unless you want to slack off. My only complaint is the constant push for sales. It's understandable, given the nature of the business, but can sometimes be overwhelming on slow weeks...
