Current Employee - Marketing Manager in Franklin Lakes, NJ

I have been working at BD full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

-Work / life balance can be good, the place clears out before 6PM and many people work from home a lot
-Pay is about average for the industry
    -Company's mission is very meaningful

    Cons

-Pace is VERY slow, processes are really broken for such a large company. Who knows how things will change with the Carefusion merger
-Limited career development options, especially if you are not connected to the right senior leaders

I have been working at BD full-time

    Pros

very good work life, truly value driven organization, successful track record, relatively stable environment. Culture of nice people.

    Cons

budgets change almost daily - if you don't spend your budget the second you get it expect to have it taken away even in a great year. run by old boys club of the old guard, which is recognized but very difficult to change. doesn't invest in training their people, matrix where nobody has decision rights, hugely change averse, doesn't know "what good looks like" and would rather feel their way around in certain functions in an undisciplined fashion than bring in experts and stick with their advise. Poor track record with diversity and supporting women in the work place...though its working to improve the latter

I have been working at BD full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The company culture is very good, and the work is very meaningful (improving healthcare). Preserves work-life balance over all. Employment is generally stable although several rounds of small-scale layoffs are present in recent years (2010-2014).

    Cons

Perks are average and are not sufficiently attractive. Promotion is not easy to come by for experienced professionals (in functional areas). Compensation is probably not sufficiently competitive but understandable given the stability and comfort offered by a well-established big company like BD.

I worked at BD full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great place to learn about manufacturing within a regulated industry. BD is large enough to gain experience across a wide variety of disciplines.

    Cons

Management is partial to the existing community preferences i.e. religious affiliation. Additionally, promotions are few and far between (six years within a group and not one promotion for anyone for about 15 people). Very conservative culture leading to a risk-averse attitude while expecting sky-high results.

    Pros

BD is well known name and has a broad range of products providing a great opportunity for cross training and gaining experience in a variety of processes.

    Cons

The focus was more on business output than efforts and achievements made by employees. Low moral from lack of this appreciation and office politics leads to high turnover.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Become better intune with the mood and tone of the employees and respond to them with sincerity.

    Pros

Franklin Lakes campus is a great work environment.

    Cons

Stable with change coming very slowly.
In terms of strategic change, not as rapid and dynamic as I would like.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus more on streamlining current decision-making processes and decision rights.

I have been working at BD as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Working at BD was a great experience because of the friendly coworkers and opportunity to apply the knowledge I have gained from my college education. It was a great learning experience.

    Cons

The cons of working at BD include the limited training I had so there were not many tasks I was qualified to perform.
