I have been working at BD

    Pros

    good benefits, great company overall

    Cons

poor IT leadership, need to cut middle management

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let the software people do what they do best. Axe middle management.

I have been working at BD full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Smart people, decent salary/benefits, very relaxed environment, flexible hours. The company has a lot of very knowledgeable people in various disciplines: biology, optics, electronics, fluidics, etc.

    Cons

Most of the products are in a overegulated clinical market which results in too much process and documentation leaving little time for actual innovation and development

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

While some bureaucracy is mandated by the government, a significant portion of it is self imposed. Letting employees focus more on productive work rather than over the top documentation would significantly speed up development and significantly reduce cost

I have been working at BD full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Nice facility, in-house gym, mandatory ergo assessment of each work station. Work-life balance is good for most positions. Organic garden - if you like gardening you can plant your own vegetables there.

    Cons

Slow: too many meetings, too few decisions. People are discouraged to speak up their technical mind, if this is not "politically" correct at a particular moment. I can never figure out what politics have to do with science.
Being pro-active is not a good thing here. Everything is solved on a reaction basis: deal with it when it happens, do not bring bad news ahead of time and try to solve "non-existing" problems! As in many other companies the management does not want to hear about problems. They want solutions! But how do you solve an issue if you do not want to acknowledge that it exists? Especially if you need other people on board to help you solve that issue. Tough!
If you work very hard, management will keep putting more work on your plate and constantly point out not what you have accomplished, but what you did not. On the other hand if you push back and slack off - that is OK too: management will let you be and later when your work does not get done they will cover for you (what a nice benefit for lazy people we have here!). Since the management did not want to deal with your laziness they feel obliged to cover their own incompetency.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not be scared of hearing about problems, embrace the problems and facilitate their solutions.

    I worked at BD

    Pros

Job felt stable; company has been around a long time. Lots of policies and processes in place for those who like that type of thing. Worked with some great people.

    Cons

Felt like a behemoth of a company in which it was hard to accomplish any kind of meaningful change. Trying to make changes is like trying to turn the Titanic.

I worked at BD full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

I loved working for this company. It was very family oriented and we all did the right thing. I learned so much here that I was able to bring to my current employer in order to make a difference.

    Cons

Towards the end of my time at BD the company became more IT focused and it changed the culture negatively.

I worked at BD full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Nice people to work with, a real team environment where everyone pitches in to get the job done.
    Salary is competitive
Manager encouraged learning new technology to improve the group's efficiency

    Cons

It takes too long to get products released.
Upper management does not believe in investing in new technology and efficiency.
Quality is too often sacrificed in order to meet deadlines and the people that suffer are the customers

Some things are done well, others not so much

I worked at BD full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The benefits package was pretty generous. Besides the basics (medical, dental, etc.) tuition reimbursement, adoption help and pet insurance was available.

    Cons

My company was purchased by BD, and the transition did not go well. We were dying on the vine without a clear vision of how our division was going to fit into our new parent.
