    Interesting work, very smart people

    Senior Software Engineer (Current Employee)
    Hunt Valley, MD

ProsIn R&D, the environment is fairly laid back. Dress is casual and no one is micro-managing your hours. The instruments we work on are cutting edge and so are the technologies (for the most part). There is still maintenance on some legacy instruments that requires old development systems to be fired up here and there, but for the most part things are moving forward. C#, C++, VS 2013, TFS 2013, etc. Great place to sharpen your design and programming skills!

ConsThe software engineering group has become top heavy, and there is not a lot of room for advancement. Can be here 15 years before getting promoted to next level. Also, management will not hesitate to hire from the outside right into higher level positions, when there are people internally who could fill the roles.

Advice to Senior ManagementAllow employees who have paid their dues here to move up, rather that being so quick to hire from the outside.

Overall a good company with good products

    Sales Manager (Former Employee)
    East Shore, SC

    ProsEthical company
    Good Benefits
    Strong company balance sheet

ConsProducts don't always meet the needs of today's customers. Behind in getting products into the market place in a timely manner. Too many changes in organization and structure: Revolving door for GM's

    Great Place to Work!

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

Pros- They have great compensation and benefits
    - beautiful NJ campus
    - many international locations
    - internal mobility is starting to pick up, certainly much better in the past few years.

Cons- sometimes being TOO risk adverse is not a good thing as it gets in the way of making decisions and creates a lot of additional (sometimes meaningless) tasks.

A generally good experience with co-workers and career development, but style wins too often over substance

Research and Development Manager (Current Employee)
    Research Triangle Park, NC

ProsLots of smart people, ethics is a priority, a genuine atmosphere of respect between co-workers. Career development opportunities are there if you seek them out.

ConsSenior management rotates frequently, making accountability difficult. A highly matrixed organization where "no" votes seem to count more than "yes" votes - this makes getting new initiatives off the ground very difficult.

Advice to Senior ManagementBroad experience across all of the businesses is important. Try to get this experience at mid- to higher-level managers instead of waiting until they are business presidents. Allow the presidents to stay in their roles for 4-5 years to implement their strategic initiatives and see how they execute.

Strategic minds have large opportunity to impact change but consensus culture delays and can be frustrating.

    Strategic Innovation (Current Employee)
    Franklin Lakes, NJ

ProsStrong commitment to improving people's health permeates organization and motivates employee efforts, organization is committed to growth, people are friendly, collaborative, and loyal to BD.

ConsConsensus driven organization delays change, brings slow pace, and prevents action - even if strategically clear.

Advice to Senior ManagementEmpower decision-making at lower levels. Some programs delayed by senior leaders' schedule rather than strategy not being developed.

    – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

It depends upon who your manager is and how they are aligned within the political spectrum

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsCompany strives to be recognized as a good corporate citizen.

ConsEngineering legacy governed by the philosophy, "if we build it, they will come." Minimal unique and novel product development from within.

Advice to Senior ManagementPerformance reviews should go UP as well as DOWN the chain of command.
