I have been working at BDO UK full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

There are some lovely people who work there.

    Cons

A general clique attitude, so if your face fits I'm sure it's a great place to work with quick promotion and recognition. However, for the majority it seems that the partners/managers, depending on your position, take advantage of those who are efficient. It is openly frowned upon if you leave at your contracted hour, even though you will not be paid overtime for any extra time spent in the office. Many dismissals just before end of probationary period - feels unfair for those workers who seemed to do a reasonable job (more than some still with the company). Lots of feedback through surveys, but nothing ever changes - waste of everybody's time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Judge each worker on their ability and effectiveness within their team, and reward accordingly not by length of time served.

    Pros

    Leaving the company for good.

    Cons

The stuck up, biased and most patronising people I have every come across.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You should all be ashamed of yourselves and the way that you treat your staff. No wonder everyone is leaving the company and going elsewhere, they don't want to work for gremlins like you lot that don't have a backbone to stand up for yourself!!!!!!!!!!!!

A hotbed of mediocrity - awful place to work for a women, bullying partners and weak management

I worked at BDO UK full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

wide international network with plenty of opportunity to do international work. Flagship impressive headquarters in Baker Street

    Cons

It is very difficult to progress on merit - the staff are good below partner level but the partners are largely unimpressive, there seems to be a lot of cronyism and many are bewildered at the partners that progress up the management tree. Bullies are not dealt with adequately - and often hold positions of power. It is not a great place to work as a senior woman - difficult to be heard and little support. PKF merger seems like displacement activity to hide the generally poor performance of the firm.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be seen to be fair - act on bullying behaviour - don't promote them! Be more democratic and promote talent not sycophants. Promote the careers of women in a positive way.

Described as 'sinking ship' by headhunter

    I worked at BDO UK

    Pros

Good staff canteen at Baker Street and nice building, but not much else ...

    Cons

Very high staff turnover in Corporate Finance, clueless and unsupportive partners that distrust each-other, redundancies, very poor opportunities for women (if you're not young, male, English and one of the 'boys', then you probably won't fit in), bullying blame culture (plenty of narcissists around), poor opportunities for interesting work - you mostly deal with small, crackpot companies whose accounts are in a total mess - not great for the CV. Overall a nightmare experience and I couldn't wait to get out of there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Foster a more collaborative culture amongst partners and incentivise them to work together towards common company or department-wide goals.

I worked at BDO UK full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - free breakfast at baker street before 8.30am (to the value of £1.50...therefore toast and tea)
    - pretty nice office in london (poor outside london)
    - work plenty of hours for the same annual pay
    - aca out of it...probably MAIN BENEFIT

    Cons

    - no recognition - all about the right handshake, wink wink, ill see you right mate attitude
    - HR appalling
    - racist firm (NO JOKE)
    - made (i.e. forced) to undertake jobs above your pay grade with client none the wiser (unethical to say the least) all about saving costs on charge out rates
    - as a firm overall its in decline and if i could rewind the clock...most likely would have gone big 4.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

start from scratch again (bottom up)

Very poor rude and aggressive management, tries to be like the Big 4 but without interesting work and the rewards

I worked at BDO UK (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Not too much control by senior management as they don't really know what's going on so you have a lot more freedom than the big 4.
    Nice canteen

    Cons

Unfair dismissals common - staff that have spent 10years there "advised to see a lawyer" and escorted out of building!!
Not a meritocracy - newer members of the team overlooked constantly
Poor rewards compared to the big4
Less interesting projects than the big4
    Rude and agressive middle managers
HR and IT internal capabilities the worst I have seen anywhere, HR can't calculate Tax and loses key and confidentials documents as a matter of routine, IT especially the "ebusiness" team can't deliver projects
Less intelligent staff than the big4

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try building an environment condiuctive to delivering for clients

    Pros

    Nice Building and canteen.
    Location good.

    Cons

    Poor directionless management
    Blame Culture
    Redundancies/Dismissals an annual event

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

As another review said, "you're being very short sighted".
Stop undermining your staff and try actually upholding the values you so glibly espouse.
