I have been working at BDO UK full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Interesting range of work with early exposure to responsibility while still receiving the necessary support. Good pragmatic attitude to flexible working - work/life balance for employees is definitely on the agenda. It's give and take however.

    Cons

Some weakness at partner level with buck passing and indecisiveness. Lots of politics around status, billings and knee jerking when the financials don't stack up. Periodic 'crack downs' on utilisation, recovery rates etc. Perception that only the partners benefit in good years - not much passed down to employees.

I have been working at BDO UK full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

It's a very good place to work. Good chances to progress and to move across other areas, even getting experience overseas.
Opportunities to propose new ideas and take them forward. Good place to obtain a good work experience.

    Cons

Lack of rewards like bonuses or instant awards for achieving tough objectives or meeting very high expectations.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The appraisal process should be less formal and more human.
Management is contaminated by old-school and close minded Directors that have been in the firm too long with no experience in any other company/sector.

I worked at BDO UK full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

    Co-workers are professional, and friendly.
Training is great - perfect for those gaining their qualifications and also CPD.
Wide variety of clients and therefore exposure to a variety of interesting accounting and audit areas.
Management and partners are all very open and easy to speak with.

    Cons

Work-life balance can often falter with fast paced and tight budget jobs.
IT systems and audit software could be improved to be more effective.
Performance feedback could be more structured, though this was being addressed and improved as I left.

Former Contractor - Summer School Student in London, England (UK)

I worked at BDO UK as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

Was only there for a limited time so I didn't find the work repetitive. The staff were lovely and my manager was really supportive. We went on a team bonding boat racing trip and it was great fun - they gave me a lot of responsibility and I was completing real tax returns, visiting clients, contributing to senior reports, etc.

I met quite a lot of partners and absolutely loved them all. My interviewer was amazing, and I arranged a meeting with a senior partner to collate information for a group project and he was so down to earth it was refreshing.

    Cons

The HR department is awful- not impressed at all. They took ages to process very simple documentation which was frustrating, and my manager only found out that she was my manager after the first week. I only received my starter book (which I was supposed to get before the placement) after the first week too.

I stayed later than I was contracted to a few times (like till 6/7) but I didn't feel pressured to, I just chose to in order to get stuff done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing what you're doing. Definitely replace the HR team completely.
