I have been working at BDO USA full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Office culture is friendly and supportive and upper management is accessible. Hours are better than most of my peers in the same city and the location of the office is great.

    Cons

Given the location of my particular office, there's a lot of travel during busy season. Hours are tough but not unmanageable and the soft comp (if you're traveling a lot) isn't bad, but it is hard to be away from home for at least 25% of the year.

I worked at BDO USA full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Genuine, good partners that run the SF Bay Area (and SF) practice.

    Cons

The hours during busy season and the travel. Honestly, travel depends on which clients you get (so you may have city clients, which I wanted) but for me the hours + commute just got to be too much.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Seek complaints from your seniors. That's the level where you always lose your employees. After they've worked with you for 3-4 years, you need to be proactive and reach out more often if you really want people to stay.

I have been working at BDO USA full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

fun work environment, flexible hours, great happy hours and company parties- diverse clientele and because they keep numbers lean, you get to see and take on responsibility early on

    Cons

no transparency about compensation and bonuses; going through an identity crisis- does it want to remain middle market or does it really want to compete with the Big 4; after all these years, they still are unsure

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

better communication about the goals of the firm and more transparency about compensation and expectations

I have been working at BDO USA full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Reasonable pay; some wonderful people to work with; very little micro-managing; opportunities to expand your skill set (up to a certain point); great benefits (although there is more room for improvement); definite proponents of work-life balance

    Cons

Not much opportunity for growth for admins unless you want to be an Office Manager. Politics can get in the way; some of the people treat admins as inferiors (socially and mentally)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not have supervisor as career advisor; Reward people based upon their contributions rather than whether or not key people are their cheerleaders
