I have been working at BHP Billiton

    Pros

Pays good, great benefits, unlimited sick days.

    Cons

    There is a lot.
Cutting costs in areas of need and blows money in other areas. Can't pay vendors on time. hse micromanages every job that it costs twice as much as it should. I never hear from my manager and when I reach out, I never get a reply. One up supervisor doesn't care.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If i keep my mouth shut and kiss some upper management, than i can get ahead. i have done an excellent job, worked many hours over, saved the company hundreds and thousands of dollars but it's still not enough. Too many decisions are made in Houston by people who have never even seen a producing well.

    Pros

Job security, opportunities to meet lots of people with different backgrounds

    Cons

Micromanaging abounds, not much room for upward growth unless you happen to be some senior mgr's favorite

I worked at BHP Billiton full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

They pay well. Getting an above average review is hard to get because it has to go through so many layers of manager approval. But they never missed a payroll. And that is worth something?

    Cons

their ability to pay their contractors in a timely manner will be the ultimate destruction of the company. Some of the vendors have been on the hook for months and cut off BHP. It has to get better, accounting.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Less meetings....more action

I have been working at BHP Billiton full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

BHP pays very well and has excellent benefits. The top executives in the company have a great vision for the company and the company charter is something that is taken very seriously. I've gotten to work with some of the brightest stars in the business.

    Cons

Middle management and supervisors do not care about the employees, there is no focus on career development, and rotations are all about who you know. While the top leaders in the company preach the charter values and have a clear vision of the future, middle management and supervisors have not bought in to the vision. Excellent people don't stay long due to poor morale.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If I could advise management, I would tell them to look past the assets and recognize that the people are what make the company. They've lost some of the best in the business due to terrible management of the people. The money and benefits are superb, but when people don't get proper training or support, at the end of the day, I think I'll take happiness over the money.

Great pay and good benefits if you can withstand workload, and you land in a department with ethical fair management.

I have been working at BHP Billiton full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Clear career ladder opportunity with fair pay, and exceptional benefits.

    Cons

Work life balance, lack of enforcement of charter values at management and peer level. Multiple meetings and required review procedures and reporting make it stressful and unattainable to actually get to work needing to be done. Lots of jumping around. At the end of the day, for stress level, work-life balance, and dignity... had to part ways.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hold management accountable at all levels. Listen to your hard working employees in the trenches. Take action immediately when strife is detected, and/or foul play is reported. Don't just document and turn your back each time. No number of round table meetings and surveys will fix what is broken departmentally if there are not repercussions, enforcement's, or action plans to discipline and/ or remove bullies.

I have been working at BHP Billiton full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Fast paced dynamic environment with no shortage of opportunities for early to mid career professionals. Compensation seems fair or better, and I do believe middle and upper management care about their people.

    Cons

An immature organization who has grown quickly and the dust is stil settling. Lack of focus on top priorities. Too many initiatives, not enough people. No resource management takes place and there is a lot of talk about work life balance, but at the end of the day you have work you have to get done. Do not expect a 40 hour or a 45 hour work week will be sufficient. 9/80's are offered but seems that on average you can only take about half of your 9/80's as there is too much work to be done. Significant organizational structure changes in regular 6 month intervals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Acknowledge your resource constraints and reduce your initiatives to only top priorities or you will continue to lose good people. Also consider KPI's that promote success cross functionally rather than only within your organizational group

    Pros

Decent work live balance, good benefits, independent work

    Cons

Management decides what you do, when you do with little thought to your personal goals and aspirations...supervisors are mere figure heads with no influence...if upper management likes you- you are fine...if they don't- you are marginalized

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pros

Pay is excellent - top tier
    benefits - top tier

    Cons

    Unfavorable work/home life balance
Mid-level management are mostly in CYA mode
    No prospective growth inventory

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the asset teams. They are the most knowledgeable about their fields. "Rules of Thumb" are not scientific enough to base a theory on production rates, EUR, R/P, Proved/2P - each field is different.
