I have been working at BHP Billiton

    Pros

Solid salary, bonus (20-30% by level), 401k (14.5% match). Great cafeteria that's subsidized at $2/day. Fantastic Christmas party.

Organization is very flat. High exposure to senior and c-level management. I found the quality of fellow analysts to be very high.

    Cons

Awful middle management within finance. A house cleaning at this level is sorely needed.

Management doesn't listen to feedback particularly related to work load. Our team has been cut a lot the past 2 years while work requirements have increased. Mixed signals are given on career path.

Systems are pretty awful as they've forced petroleum to match mining which allows little to no flexibility in designing reporting that works well. It takes huge amounts of systems time to get back the data you need.

Title system is very strange and reflects Australian naming conventions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

360 reviews could help show senior management the real weak links in their lower tiers. Stop ignoring the jerks and takers. It's why your good people leave.

I have been working at BHP Billiton

    Pros

Great benefits and good group of people to work with.

    Cons

Changes in procedures happen all too frequently. Computer systems go down often and outages are a regular issue.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have more in-house computer techs and less outsourcing of network support.

I have been working at BHP Billiton as a contractor

    Pros

Good pay, Flexible time off, everyone is helpful to each other.

    Cons

Seems a little disorganized. Not much communication between departments that are working on a common project. This is very strange. There should be one project lead.

I have been working at BHP Billiton full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great pay, Benefits, and challenging work. Work life balance is pretty good unless you are a manager. $2 lunches can't be beat. The micor managing culture is slowly fading away but there is a long way to go

    Cons

Company seems to have no real direction for where it wants to go. Very little success has been achieved in exploration to bring in new reserves. Management is too risk adversive and not willing to take chances on smaller plays. Only seem interested in the next big thing instead of stringing together moderate successes. Overly process oriented which prevents being a first mover into areas and finding the next big thing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

take some risk. remove the red tape and listen to your employess. They know what they are doing and how to get the job done. That is why you hired them.

I have been working at BHP Billiton full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Everyone here will talk about how much they enjoy BHP as a company, their co-workers, and office environment. They promote mainly from within, and they really take stock in how you are as a worker, and how much you contribute. Time off is extremely easy with the location I'm at, though I've heard it's different at corporate. I love my boss and the other people I work directly for.

    Cons

The outsourced third-party service desk. It's painful.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I'm not sure about the rest of you, but my boss, you keep on keeping on!

Former Employee - Engineer in Tulsa, OK

I worked at BHP Billiton full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

great training and structured pay. BHP greatly focused on training for all individuals, whether you were an admin assistant or a Sr. manager/VP. pay follows suit and they try to be in the top 75% of pay between other companies or similar and smaller size. This is benficial to the employees. Cafeteria plan has excellent food and is very cheap. retirement benefits are plush and worth sticking around for. Good company for sure

    Cons

no advancement, too many processes. The upper management lacked direction and understanding of anything shale, their experience was strickly offshore, this led to many misguided directions within upper management. The company wasnt doing too well with their newly acquired shale assets. They were too many processes and too conservative. cost them a ton of money and made many wells unprofitable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    offshore isnt everything

I have been working at BHP Billiton full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Good pay and benefits, career progression, travel etc. Good career paths in place for most disciplines.

    Cons

Sometimes long hours and tough expectations that can impact personal life, although culture does seem to be changing some with new management. Lots of processes in place that dont appear very effective, but again there is evidence of this changing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue with efforts to change the culture, it is making a difference.
