Working in healthcare is not a stable workplace.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsMany excellent co-workers willing to share knowledge. Opportunities for advanced learning.
Organization is doing many great things to advance medicine.

ConsExtremely slow in getting decisions from senior leaders.
Open positions take a very long time to fill.
Management incentives far exceed the merit increases seen by the work staff.

ProsBenefits are normal, however they may be cut in the future due to the decline of payments healthcare receives.

ConsLow pay compared to other like companies. Promotions are only given if a spot opens up, not based on the job you perform. Decline in job security.

Advice to Senior ManagementDo what you can to keep your good people, get rid of the dead weight.

    Stagnant organization

    Senior Systems Analyst (Former Employee)

ProsStill one of the highest rated hospital systems in the country, though it seems to be slipping a bit. You can feel good you are making a difference in peoples lives.

The IT systems are on very current technology for an older hospital systems.

    ConsSalaries are average to low.

The health benefits are surprisingly poor for one of the top hospitals in the country.

There are too many middle managers who have become stagnant in their positions.

The doctors are prima donnas. They have too much influence over areas, they know nothing about like IT.

Advice to Senior ManagementClear out dead weight in middle management.

    Disappointing Leadership

    Manager (Current Employee)

ProsBJC has some of the best staff I have ever encountered. They are devoted to taking care of their patients and helping each other. The mission of providing the best care is foremost in the staff's thoughts and actions.

ConsLeadership, especially senior leadership needs to walk the talk. For all the talk about values, specifically integrity that they did at my organization, senior leaders frequently fail to behave in a manner that appears to be in alignment with the values. We just had a layoff to save money by eliminating FTEs yet most of the positions that they "eliminated" are now posted online and are being refilled. Its really disappointing.

Hectic and rewarding with a glimmer of greatness.

Senior IT Analyst (Current Employee) Brentwood, MO

ProsA positive outlook on work/life balance, near bleeding edge technology for some platforms and a definite local positive impact for your job.

ConsStructure, political infighting and attrition to theoretically higher paying positions are the biggest 'cons' to working in IT at BJC. Be prepared to jump from topic-topic quickly.

Advice to Senior ManagementFurther emphasize the local impact of projects; avoid marginalizing your skilled employees.

Good Work/Life Balance, but Other Things Could Be Better

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Saint Louis, MO

Pros-Good work/life balance. Offers a compressed work schedule. Many people get off at 3 or 3:30.
-Many of the people who work here have been here for ages.
-They do offer a pension, along with a 401k. Most places these days don't offer both.
    -The job is fairly easy.
    -Health benefits are decent.

Cons-Not a lot of room for advancement on the finance side of things.
-Pay is below market value, unless you're a top executive.
-Employees must pay for parking, unless you want to park a good distance from your location.
-Management allows employees who have been here for a long time to waste away and contribute nothing to the department.
-Many are stuck in their old ways and refuse to catch up with the times (e.g technological advances, computer systems, etc.).
    -No reimbursement for continuing education.
-Managament does not give input or feedback on projects employees are working on. They just agree to whatever the employee says. Many in management have a "rubber stamp" mentality.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet rid of those employee's that are not contributing anything to the department.

Worthwile projects with very weak management and career growth

Manager (Current Employee) Saint Louis, MO

    ProsCulture is patient oriented
    Very good expected organization longevity
    Very strong health innovator
Marginal business function and technical capabilities

ConsStrategic plan for only 5 years
Executive leadership does not have a standard vision of the organization, let alone a road map to meet the future
Very strong "old boy" and "old girl" networks

Advice to Senior ManagementDefine your future, define the roadmap, standardize dashboards (project and operational), reward innovation, utilize best practice/expertise appropriately.

    OK company

Administrative Assistant (Current Employee) Saint Louis, MO

ProsAn opportunity to learn about a lot of things. Always hire new people with mad education credentials.

ConsSome employees been there forever and no longer want to improve and just do a crappy job.
