I have been working at BKD full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Small office environment with large national firm reputation and support, opportunities for growth and advancement, stability, high morals and standards

    Cons

Benefits and pay could be better, but they're still competitive. Very conservative partners/executives that are not open to change.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You HAVE to be open to change and innovation. Listen to your young professionals and staff. Just because you're a Partner doesn't mean you know everything. You're behind the times and your people are your greatest resources, so listen to them.

I have been working at BKD full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Working with very talented individuals and learn a lot as a first year staff. The hours are not terrible during your first year, but get progressively worse.

    Cons

Underpaid, unrealistic expectations, work-life balance, benefits are non-existent, no incentive to stay, no diversity. Nearly impossible to work and study for the CPA exam.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay your employees. The Big 4 and smaller firms have better pay. Offer rotational programs during off months.

    Pros

Good place to start a career and gain experience at a quick pace.

    Cons

Benefits and salary are not as great as competing firms.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus less on billable hours and more on work life balance.

I have been working at BKD full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The office culture is great, the friendships I've made are fantastic. The partners are great people and I truly enjoy being there everyday.

    Cons

The benefits are sub-par, the pay is consistently below market, the company does not offer bonuses. They consistently require staff to work above their positions, but are slow to promote and offer raises.

    Cons

    Typical Public Accounting Firm

I have been working at BKD full-time

    Pros

Good way to gain exposure in different industries (variety depends on which office you work in); Becker CPA review is paid for (be financially prepared to test in every open testing window until you pass all 4 sections); learn a great deal during your first year....

    Cons

Work a lot of hours during busy season (work/life balance could be improved); upper management has favorites; lots of "constructive criticism"; compensation could be higher

I have been working at BKD full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Everyone at BKD is very encouraging and supportive of new staff. There are a multitude of opportunities in a variety of industries. Growth at the Springfield office moves at a quicker rate than other BKD offices and staff are thrust into situations that they normally would not fill until the 2 year mark around the one year mark. Audit associates will travel and experience working as a team for a series of weeks.

    Cons

The travel is more than I initially expected. In my first year, I was out of town over 100 nights. This does not include commuting jobs. Overall, I realized the travel does not enable me to live the active lifestyle that I enjoy to keep me at my fullest, and am seeking an opportunity in a career with little to no travel.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hiring more people out of college has been a help. Unfortunately, the location of the office and the location of the clients is not something that can change. Management is very supportive of growth and transition within BKD and will work to help you be at your best. I truly enjoy working with each and every one of my supervisors and achieving unmatched client service.

    Pros

Great training, great people to work with. Everyone was friendly and more than willing to help.

    Cons

Long hours but that's to be expected during busy season.

I have been working at BKD

    Pros

Flexible scheduling: as long as the work gets done and you put in the hours, no one seems to care much when you come and go.
One month of paid time off each year. During busy season they feed us dinner twice a week plus lunch on Saturdays. They feed us breakfast on Friday year round.
Because the audits are smaller you get to work with more clients.
Busy season hours are reasonable - usually 50-60 hrs/wk.

    Cons

The training is abysmal. Questions are not encouraged. Expect to figure things out on your own.
