I have been working at BMC Software full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Culture is great and the people are great to work with. Over the years we have adapted to changes in the market place for the best of the company. Compensation is fair and the benefits are some of the best in the business.

    Cons

This change can always lead to turnover in many areas. Those who can get through the change can prosper and can excel in there job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Makes all the products better and best of breed. Some products are better then others and we need to stick to what we are good at and stay good long term.

I have been working at BMC Software full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

BMC is very open to people moving into new roles, trying new things, and growing broadly and deeply. This is a huge benefit to me personally and to my ability to retain top talent.

    Cons

BMC does not market themselves strongly in the public eye. I look forward to mentioning to people that I work at BMC and not needing to explain our business at a basic level. Broad marketing, becoming more of a household name, would be excellent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stick with a solution focus, not only software licenses. Companies are buying to gain efficiencies, impact net income, or otherwise improve their business. Addressing the full solution set including implementation, warranty, and education as PART of selling and not after the license is sold would make all BMC organizations part of the customer success.

I have been working at BMC Software full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

BMC tends to hire really talented people, and I have worked on some interesting projects over the years. Strong customer emphasis. BMC has had a strong commitment to delivering quality software and providing excellent service to the customer, and this has made it nice as an employee to not be constantly apologizing to customers for a lack of these items.

    Cons

BMC has been cutting back on staff for 5 to 10 years now, so it gets harder and harder to keep up with new development, maintenance, and support. Raises and promotions are few and far between. Management shuffles make it like starting over at a new job every year or so. They never survey workers about manager effectiveness, so mediocre managers hang around forever and just move around. Still can't tell if going private in late 2013 was a good or bad thing for company and employees (I am sure those at top took care of themselves).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management reviews (all levels) should include a survey of the managed employees. They get promoted/rewarded/public accolades while the people they manage are terrorized and miserable. Give employees a sense that we have a future here. Give up a little of your bonus money and get some help at the bottom.

I have been working at BMC Software full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

I have mostly had fair and level headed senior management. Senior management folks in the pre sales division are extremely approachable. The division has an average tenure of 6+ years - which is huge in today's market. For me - the approachability of management, autonomy in work and decent pay are the biggest pros.

    Cons

Growth in career can become a challenge if the employee doesn't have clear plans. Top management strategies take time to reach rank and file.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It's happening now - but top management needs to be on the ground.

I worked at BMC Software full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

BMC offered me opportunities to move around to different roles. This allowed me to learn new things and remain challenged.

    Cons

At times, the leadership was not fully in touch with the "feet on the street".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take the time to talk with and listen to employees to understand what is working and not working. Pay close attention to the culture.

Great work life balance, great people. Co-workers and mangers who generally care about your growth and career path. Great global presence and teamwork.
