    Good Company to work for.

Product Developer (Former Employee) San Jose, CA

ProsBMC has good work and life balance culture. It is easy to work with cross functional teams and offshore teams..

ConsNothing specific as cons in working at BMC Software. Does have lots of projects going on simultaneously by offshore teams, so time management is a must..

Good company, but slow to adapt at times.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) San Jose, CA

ProsBMC Software sells some exceptional products, and can address a lot of pain inside of IT operations. The Cloud Lifecycle Management tools are exceptiona, and at least 18 months ahead of the competition.

ConsSometimes you see people that should not be doing the jobs that they are in. They are either unqualified, or incompetent, yet they stay and nobody is forcing them to leave. They also do not take many risks, but risk is inherent in innovation.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe a bit more focused on the product and the customer, not necessarily the stock price. If the development org is not able to write stable and functional code, then you should consider drastic changes in that area to shake things up.

good for architects, bad for lower level engineers

Senior Product Developer (Current Employee) San Jose, CA

Prosrelatively stable engineering department. despite work being moved to india, engineers are accomodated to other product teams. all attrition is based on performance only.

Conssince most work is moving to india, engineers are under pressure to work at lead and architect level. workplace is cramped, and office benefits (cafeteria, gym, etc) are being eliminated quickly.

Advice to Senior ManagementThey need to communicate clearly with the employees in San Jose regarding what jobs will be retained here, so they know what to work towards.

BMC - stable employment - boring technology

Senior Product Developer (Current Employee) Sunnyvale, CA

ProsCompany growing fast - stable job and good chance to advance career.

The company got into the whole BSM story very early, and has had a lot of success at selling this to customers. Our customer base is constantly growing, and that makes for a lot of work and stable product development jobs.

The possible risk to a job here is that there is a trend to move work to the India office, and I would estimate that in another 3-4 years most of the work will move there. So existing employees need to create a place for them in a leaner environment.

ConsOutdated technology. Very IT specific work. if you understand how IT organizations work, or have good working knowledge about datacenters and all it takes to manage them, you will enjoy this work. Otherwise you will have to forget about all the neat stuff being done out there by companies like Google and Facebook. No place for that in this company.

No work is done on the cutting edge. The perspective is to gain customers, not to lead on technology front.

Advice to Senior ManagementAllow people to move between difference job functions, across engineering and marketing and sales. Not much support for that currently. Company does not seem to be interested in encouraging employees to do so.

    OK if unspectacular

Senior Product Developer (Current Employee) Sunnyvale, CA

ProsMost Mainframe areas of software development allow considerable flexability in work hours, and freedom to work in interesting areas.

ConsManagament has little understanding of the work people are doing so employees need to be able to judge their own contrubution and development and be satisified with that judgement. Education and training is OJT and self directed with online courses weak. Budget constraints fail to provide growth in professional societies or confrence attendance.

Advice to Senior ManagementFrequent layoffs create an atmosphere of risk avoidance from employees and lower management. Midlevel and upper management need to get out among the emplyees and spend time in informal settings to find out what is gong on.
