    Pros

Where can you make 100k in one year with no degree!? The railroad. Went to college, got "the job", worked two years and was broke...BNSF first year 88k. On track to make over 100k this year.

    Cons

If you hire out from 2014 on you will probably get cut. It just happens when you have a seniority based job. Yeah the hours are terrible, you can have a set schedule if you want one, or chase the money it is all up to you. This place is about numbers. How fast can you move from point A to point B all road employee's are meat for that grinder. But they pay the hell out of you to do it.

    Advice to Management

Managment is hit or miss. They have the people who do an amazing job and never use employee's for their advancement. Then you have people who will throw you under a bus in a split second for a 2k promotion. We at the railroad know who is who and we avoid the bad one's and help the good.

    Pros

    Great company.
    Many opportunities
    Great benefits package
Very military friendly for recently separated veterans regardless of skillset

    Cons

    Unions
    Union dues
    Union workers
Union environment where hard work is mocked and laziness is celebrated
Union environment where hard work is punished and laziness is rewarded

    Advice to Management

God help you all. I can't understand how management can function when 80% of it's workforce is literally against you. Working to sabotage any production. It truly blows my mind.

    Pros

The pay is great. It's an enjoyable career with great retirement benefits. Once you're tired of being on the ground you can move up and become an engineer and run the locomotive.

    Cons

You'll be on call for a long time, Getting called at all times of the day or night for work sucks. Also You're phone better always be on and ready for your call to go to work.

    Advice to Management

    The Attendance policy is oppressive.

    Pros

Very, very good pay, good benefits, railroad retirement-pension, job stability (your job stability gets better and better as you get older and your seniority gets higher), union, co-workers look out for each others' safety, left alone to do work without worrying about boss breathing down your neck.
Probably one of the few jobs left in America that you can make well over 100k without a college degree almost right off the bat (depending on location).

    Cons

Lack of schedule- hard to plan things, difficult to get a day off, very hard on family life, seems very difficult to transfer from one region to another part of the country.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to be more proactive instead of being reactive- ESPECIALLY with safety and rules, you will get get much more from your workers if you treat us with respect and cooperation rather then trying to fail and fire us.

    Pros

Values development of employees. It's a place where you can build your career.

    Cons

Work life balance may be lacking. It's a 24/7 industry so employees may be expected to work at odd hours or for exempt employees long hours with little disconnect from work.

    Pros

Good solid career with great pay and benefits. Something new all the time. Provided with excellent training and tools most of the time.

    Cons

This particular job requires to be on call a lot but that's how it works. New employees will travel a lot.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the men in the field. Keep up the safety focus but maybe provide more incentive like we used to in the old days. Granted no one should take safety for granted people respond to positive re enforcement.

    Pros

Incredible compensation, health insurance, and Railroad Retirement! Outdoor work, within an Awesome moving corner office! Opertunity to grow as a person, and career wise. It's like absolutely everything else in life, you get back exactly what you put out. If you work hard, serve others, and treat others how they want to be treated, you will have Joy and fun in your work.

    Cons

On call, work/personal life balance, 80 hr work week one week, and 30 hr the next. Seniority is everything, not your attitude or aptitude. Away from home motel time, sometimes as bad as 35 hrs in the hotel, most the time 12-20. Again it's what you make it, if your self disaplined, you can plan your time and life around the railroad career. Use every minute your given, don't let the railroad waste your life waiting......in the siding, motel, for your call at home, etc.

    Advice to Management

In each terminal/station, have a select group of Engineers and Conductors who have a positive attitude and aptitude, and genuinely ask their opinions on future track plans and changes in operating practices. Long after a local mid level manger is promoted on, we the crews have to deal with the good or poor decisions. Ask us for our perspective on bottlenecks, and ways of serving our customers better.
Also you get more of what you praise, if you see an employee with a great attitude, who is going the extra mile, praise him! The employee will feel happy, and others will see this is what is encouraged, in this company. P. S. Happy Employees serve your customers better and make you much more money!

    Pros

Money, time off (I'm "allowed" more time off here than in any of my previous jobs), benefits, and (most) of the people. The work/life balance is what you make of it. Prioritize time off if you have a family and other activities

    Cons

On call, odd hours, some trainmasters/management, some of the people you work with

    Advice to Management

Find a way to get valid claims paid easier, focus attention (ops tests, etc) more on those with bad attitudes and poor work ethic than those with good attitudes and good work ethic. This would begin to foster a new generation of attitudes and perceptions of management
