I worked at BNSF Railway as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Great pay ($4,000/month); relocation assistance ($1700/summer); opportunities all over the country
Everyone is very friendly and open to teach you what they do.
Hands on opportunities: I was able to use all the tools and machines on gangs, weld, grind, cut rail, and so much more! :)
Opportunities to travel even as an intern...you get to stay in nice hotels, get meals, etc on BNSF's account.

    Cons

Traveling is a must as you go into management.

I have been working at BNSF Railway full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The best money for the education level required. Good insurance, profit sharing, 401k match and retirement. (Pay, insurance and benefits are negotiated by the Union.) Lots of available overtime. (Some overtime is required. There's more if you want it .)

    Cons

Scheduling can be irregular and unpredictable. Through Freight runs require us to be away from home for at least two days; sometimes more. It's the nature of the business. Patience and flexibility are a must.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    I worked at BNSF Railway

    Pros

BNSF Railway has been in business for well over 165 years. I've had the opportunity to work in various departments (from TS to Operations to Contract) and found out what it takes to "move the railroad". If you land a job at BNSF, I highly suggest you learn the Operations part of the railroad... and have an open mind. The company does embrace Diversity.

    Cons

Long hours... but how many companies out there still have the typical 8-5 job ?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at BNSF Railway full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The pay and the benefits. A great place to work compared to other jobs. The management in my location are some of the very best.

    Cons

Long hours. The trains never stop moving and you work nearly every holiday. Sometimes management has no idea what they are talking about. All trainmasters should come from the ground.
