    Not interested in employee development

    Account Manager (Former Employee)
    London, England (UK)

ProsJob security, work life balance, very easy business to stay in if you are not motivated to change. Lots of opportunity to try different jobs in such a big company.

ConsVery bad base pay, they constantly change sales targets during the year which makes it impossible to motivate sales people - e.g. achieve your annual target early in the year to be told that your target is going to be increased. Lack of accelerators (extra commission) to motivate you to over achieve on your targets. Extremely poor sales management through out the business.

Advice to Senior ManagementImprove your sales management and motivation for account managers. Stop moving the goal posts and you might get people to stay around longer.

Not happy as most in BT India

    Senior Software Engineer (Current Employee)
    Bangalore (India)

    Pros- Better than average salary.
    - Work from home facility.
    - BT has a good finical sheet, company is doing good money wise.

ConsWell there are too many, let's stick with top ones
    - First, you will not be part of BT, you will be like just another vendor, you will be treated like that, you will work like that, you are not more important, you are not less important too.
    - BT need to drop 2 or 3 vendor to hire you, so they will ask you to work like that.
    - Most are hired from vendors(Infy, TechM, Virtusa), work culture is like any other service compony.
    - You need to work with vendors, most of the day, need to visit there offices.

Advice to Senior Management- no one listen, so no advantages in saying something.

    Global Services

    Project Manager (Former Employee)

ProsGreat people doing some leading edge development. Good team atmosphere and very supportive peer environment.

ConsPeople management at BT Global Services is done in an underhand way with a lot of pressure put on people managers to mark down extremely competent individuals in order that the pay bill is reduced. Career opportunity is virtually non existent. Promotion is done in a very under handed manner with no mentoring. BTGS relies on people's loyalty in order to deliver it's customers obligations.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf BT wants to start attracting high calibre people then stop listening to the HR consultants, start treating people fairly through open and honest communication and you will start to see the improvements you require to return this to a great company that everyone is proud to work for.

I would never return to BT....

Desk Based Account Manager (Former Employee)
    Budapest (Hungary)

ProsI gained a lot of experience.
    I received quite good salary
    I had very nice colleagues...
I cannot think of anything else... cannot think of anything else.

ConsMost of the experience was "firefighting", because business processes are horrible.
The management seemed to be idle in terms of making the employees' life easier.
Cost cut.... cost cut.... cost cut....
    Cheating in clients' satisfaction surveys....

Advice to Senior ManagementBusiness Process improvement needed

Over-worked people, work unrelated to employee's skills, sad recognition system, no infrastructure

    Consultant (Current Employee)
    Bangalore (India)

ProsThe salary is decent I suppose. The team dinners are good. And that is just about all I can say that is good about working here.

ConsEmployees are expected to work on anything and everything. It doesn't really matter if the work aligns to their skill set or not. Blatant lies about the work during interviews. In-sourced projects are really really bad with most of them just having the work of taking over the mess the vendors have created. The in-sourcing vendor employee to BT employee ratio is about 3:1. So one BT employee replaces around 3-4 vendor employees. Too much process to work with in order to do any design/development. Expectations are too high with many people working during their vacations. Line manager is never satisfied and wants people to keep taking more work. Really bad recognition system. The people who make a lot of noise and take credit for other people's work are the best performers. A huge disconnect between what the immediate line manager expects and what the higher ups in UK expect. Line manager does not want to listen to any problems that you might be having. Just wants the work done. There is a lot of fancy managerial talk giving lip-service about career growth and learning plans and blah blah but in the end it is made sure that you are loaded with work to about 2 times your capacity so that you don't have time to do any of those things. No infrastructure at all. There's no food available in the cafeteria and there's no transportation. Work from home is available for only one day in a month.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou are going to see a large outflow of people soon if nothing is done about the constant work pressure and unjust expectations. Your "anonymous" surveys are manipulated.

Slow and Complicated Processes, Ok place to work.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Singapore (Singapore)

ProsProfessional culture and stable well-defined jobscopes.
    Structured and process driven.
Good office environment / location, and adequate best-practice benefits.

ConsSlow, complex, bureucratic supporting processes that impede business growth and personal development.

Advice to Senior ManagementSimplify the way we work, or lose good people whom care most for the business.
Leave the decisions to the business and hold them responsible, rather than micromanage to a state of unacceptable delay.

    Typical telco

    Director (Current Employee)
    London, England (UK)

ProsDiverse company with many different kinds of projects and customers.

ConsLack of A grade people that make a winning team, continually failing against modern, more nimble competitors due to bad ideas and poor execution.

Advice to Senior ManagementBring new blood in and give them the authority to do things differently, accepting that you need to think and act like a technology company to compete and win in the modern world.
