I worked at Baker Botts full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

My partner-level bosses were pretty great. Fun personalities, yet still very professional. We're very encouraging and committed to developing employee talent. I know not all partners were like that, but mine were.

    Cons

Staff is very gossip oriented. Rumors started over nothing or simple jealousy. Very catty, dog-eat-dog. Very hard to know who your friends were. People actively trying to get one another fired.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Understand that work productivity is affected when staff managers are allowed to fraternize with the people they are in charge of.

I have been working at Baker Botts full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The firm has a lot of benefits, including a great 401K plan. The compensation is very good, at least in my department. I would consider our HR department to be the best in Houston. We work a 7.5 hour day. I wouldn't want to work anywhere else.

    Cons

Some would like to work 9/80, but know in a law firm that would probably never happen.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I feel our management does a great job. I would like to see some firm activities where everyone can get together outside of work.

I worked at Baker Botts full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Working on complicated matters for sophisticated clients--you get access to better cases, better funding, and better training in Texas.

    Cons

Partnership is mostly a dream--be happy to work hard and get paid well and leave it at that. You're getting experience and access to clients with complicated cases and big budgets that you just won't see at less prestigious firms.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management is already aware that they are aloof and separated from the associates--they aren't interested in my advice

    Pros

Compared to other downtown law firms, the people at Baker Botts are nice and considerate.

    Cons

Face it, it's a downtown law firm. You will work lots of hours, receive little thanks, and be stressed-out most of the time.

Former Employee - Human Resources Intern in Houston, TX

    I worked at Baker Botts

    Pros

The friendly environment and the benefits of working for a large firm. The human resource department always makes it easy to ask questions and talk to them if anything is going on in the workplace that you do not agree with. I think that working for Baker Botts was a great opportunity to learn about the firm and the way human resource departments work.

    Cons

The environment and work load can be very busy some days. I think that although you get a great exerience, it may be hard to obtain recommendations from employers that work above you. They are constantly growing and keep busy and do not commit to being a reliable resource for recommendation in the future.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think they presented themselves in a very official way and made the emloyees feel welcomed.

Paralegal Clerk - Interesting insights into legal profession, but can be tedious

    Former Employee - Paralegal Clerk
    Former Employee - Paralegal Clerk

    I worked at Baker Botts

    Pros

As a paralegal clerk, it offers some insights into a big "Firm" for those considering law school. The people (attorneys, paralegals, support staff, etc.) at Baker Botts were very professional and kind. Some projects allow you to get some interesting perspectives on the true nature of legal work. If you think it's worth it, the sporadic, intense overtime can be offset by overtime pay.

    Cons

The paralegal clerk's workload can get pretty tedious and overloaded at times, particularly with cases with sensitive deadlines. Expect monotonous work at times. Since you're just a clerk, there are times where you're not seeing the "big picture" of the projects you're working on.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let the clerks see the context of projects. Ensure clerk work is spread equitably.
