I have been working at Baker Tilly Virchow Krause

    Pros

I have met some great people here. The hours weren't too bad.

    Cons

Management seems to win terrible projects. They low-ball everything to get the client. If you're not familiar with how professional service works, your bonus is based on realization (google it). If you get a on project with a bad budget, the odds of you going over budget are high. That will lead to a lot of stress.

There just seems to be no culture at Chicago office. Everyone is gone most of the time. It can get lonely.

If you have experience, I feel that you can do better than Baker Tilly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be realistic with budgeting, or don't hold people accountable to a unrealistic expectation.

    Pros

Company provide food most of the days during busy season to keep you in and working.

    Cons

Making the smallest mistake will jeopardize your job immediately. Work/Life balance in non-existent during busy season.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep employees that would be a great contributiont to company and understand that small mistakes will be made. As long as the mistakes does not jeopardize company-client relationship.

I worked with some wonderful people at the firm. They taught me a lot about accounting. Great social environment

    Cons

Small clients, felt like I was doing bookkeeping half the time, pressure to meet charge budget, I felt bad even charging time to my clients

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase emphasis on quality instead of cutting corners to meet a budget

I worked at Baker Tilly Virchow Krause full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great opportunities to work with people from different teams. Fairly easy to get your work on display to senior management. There are a few awesome people. Generous PTO and fair pay.

    Cons

People are very clicky and our office is not very social. Definitely have to adhere to strict preferences of your manager or managers, and it definitely isn't an atmosphere based on independent thinking and creativity. Practices towards towards social media are antiquated and stifling--doesn't have a FB presence, and blocks FB in the office. Mentoring program is a good idea but not structured well. Surprisingly high turnover. In the past 6 months, at least 9 senior level people left. Also, not very transparent or consistent messaging when people do leave--sometimes there are announcements sometimes not. I'm alao convinced that they need to retrain the performance counselors, as I've witnessed inconsistent approaches to feedback. Culture can definitely definitely be described as stuffy and political--a winning combination.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a more progressive approach to social media. Also, inspire creativity, dont stifle it. Need to coach performance counselors on how to give positive and negative opinions of their subordinate's work. Both criticism and praise are important to growth and development.
    Provide transparent communication to employees.

I have been working at Baker Tilly Virchow Krause

    Pros

They understand a work life balance.
They have a fair pay scale.
    Competitive Benefits
Base level staff are very nice

    Cons

Senior Management and Partners are out of touch.
    Poor communication throughout the company.
Not much concern on keeping talented staff on board.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

In the past 2 years we have lost 50% of our offices employees. Many people start out at our office and leave after 1-2 years. Senior management and Partners are very tough on employees, and many people feel like they are walking on eggshells.

I have been working at Baker Tilly Virchow Krause

    Pros

-Responsibility levels are high at a low lever
-Access to Managers/Senior Managers is easy to achieve
    -Decent PTO
    -Travel for training

    Cons

-Partners get paid - no one else does (Salaries way below market for the amount of hours worked)
-Marathon hours during busy season - constant talk of shifting work to non-busy season times is never followed up with results
-Highly political atmosphere - unless you are kissing up - you aren't getting promoted early
-No bonus package below Manager - long hours are rarely rewarded
-Managers and above micro-manage your jobs
    -Poor training
    -No CPA bonus package

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to learn that they need to take care of their people. The constant talk and buzz of bonuses, increased compensation, more PTO, more flexibility, etc can only go on if you meet expectations. I would also encourage a Partner/Senior Manager relationship management course in how to talk to people. Maybe Tim Christen can teach the course. I spoke more words to him during my employment than most Partners I worked with.

You have created a toxic working culture and I would discourage anyone from working at Baker Tilly.
