Favoritism at its worst and lack of vision

Senior Network Engineer (Former Employee)
Bridgewater, NJ

I worked at Baker & Taylor full-time for less than a year

ProsI can't think of any, I was looking for a new job within two weeks of starting there and glad I got out!

ConsWhere do I start, filthy office, broken desk furniture and the favoritism I saw between a director and a direct report/manager was unbelievable it was like watching a master and his puppy dog!

I worked in technology and any suggestions on improvement are met with a resounding NO simply because my manager (the puppy dog) and his boss didn't understand the technology, plus how could you challenge what they did in the past?

I was a full time salaried employee however I felt I was treated like an hourly employee.

Advice to Senior ManagementDump all the middle managers and directors, *maybe* that'll help you get things straightened out but I doubt it.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

bullied and harassed

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Bridgewater, NJ

I have been working at Baker & Taylor full-time for more than 10 years

Proslong standing company, large company that seems to be moving along with the times and current state of the business

Consnot much paid time off. Medical benefits are not good at all. No recognition for a job well . HR department is a joke. Upper management do not treat their employees well unless they favor them. No training programs to help employees do their jobs effectively. Work loads are impossible to manage.

Advice to Senior Managementtreat your employees with respect, we work hard for you. Learn to be fair to everyone not just the ones you favor. stop forcing out veterans.

ProsGood pay and ok work hours.

ConsVery Hostile environment, very Cliche group of people and no communication skills at all, lots of broken promises and none...I mean there is no job security At ALL!!!You can lose your job there simply from being sick.

Advice to Senior ManagementBetter communication and stop treating their employees more than just disposable trash.

A non ending struggle

Clerical/Office Area (Current Employee)
Commerce, GA

I have been working at Baker & Taylor full-time for more than 8 years

ProsEmployee Book Sales, Great Co Workers, 5 day work week

ConsNo communication, No chance of advancement unless higher paid employees lose their job, Filthy work environment, No job security, Promises unfulfilled, No raises or very minimal raise, The longer I work at Baker & Taylor the further behind I get because salary does not keep up with cost of living, Insurance premiums etc...Great CEO, Mr. Morgan is a man of high morals and good intentions for the comapany and employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementDeliver the Future...get rid of the past! Baker & Taylor needs change. Some Supervisors should be made to understand that they do not "own" their departments and personal life should be separate from work life. Favoritism should be addressed and dealt with quickly. No more Focus Meetings, no one will speak up about the "real issues"...anonymity is a must.

This company sucked, even after 10+ years there

Production Manager, Marketing (Current Employee)
Charlotte, NC

I have been working at Baker & Taylor full-time for more than 10 years

ProsFree advance copy books -- but only if you knew the right people to give you some. Sometimes, a free B movie (advance copy) if you were lucky.

ConsNo communications from top management. Employees learned about stuff through the newspaper. Even middle managers were kept clueless and couldn't answer questions from employees. Huge turnover in many departments and major unhappy employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementCommunicate. communicate. communicate. communicate. In 10 years on same floor as top management, I think I saw one or two once or twice a year. MBWA (Management by Walking Around)? Epic fail.

Your are expected to dedicate your life to work not work to live.

Inside Sales (Current Employee)

I have been working at Baker & Taylor

ProsShort commute with low traffic

ConsExpected to work long hours, regardless of family responsibilities. Not being available 7x24x365 is considered poor performance. They walk the fine line when it comes to what are legal employment practices.

Advice to Senior Managementreduce management, reward emplyoyees for hard work.
