Decent environment to begin in a Health and Fitness related field.

Martial Arts Instructor (Former Employee)
Saint Paul, MN

I worked at Bally Total Fitness part-time for more than 3 years

ProsVery flexible staff. Free gym membership. A lot of easy going people who had similar interests as you. Not a very high stress job, even though you have to meet monthly revenue quotas. Great prices and deals offered a lot of the time. Family friendly.

ConsSome places are bad locations. As all customer service related jobs, you'll always have to deal with very difficult people. Sometimes the general system at headquarters was no updated, so you couldn't give your clients and members the proper information they were looking for.

Employment was good.

Front Desk Receptionist (Former Employee)
Indianapolis, IN

I worked at Bally Total Fitness part-time for less than a year

ProsMany hours 52+, free use of gym, decent benefit package available, opportunities for advancement, working close to personal trainers and getting to meet new people.

ConsWas part time so benefits came directly out of my check, company is certainly old fashioned, actually was just bought out by L A fitness.

Challenging and fun environment

Assistant Manager (Former Employee)
Chesapeake, VA

I worked at Bally Total Fitness

ProsWorking in a world class Fitness Club/Spa is pretty much an ideal work environment, and Bally Total Fitness is as big as it gets in this industry. You meet tons of interesting people who want to achieve or maintain fitness goals. If you like exercise, talking about health and nutrition Bally's would be a great place for you. I always enjoyed signing people up and seeing there faces in the gym as they worked on their goals.

You can work out for free, wear athletic clothing to work, meet attractive people and brag about where you work ( people always seem fascinated by this). I had a good General Manager who kept things competitive but rewarding.

ConsIts a SALES job through and through. If you do not like networking, up-selling, cross selling, generating leads etc then this might not be for you. Numbers are called in multiple times a day to upper management to make sure your facility is on task. Now don't get me wrong, working in a Fitness Club is almost motivation enough to help you make goals etc. But at the end of the day you are expected to generate appointments, leads and convert "walk ins" to members.

Hours vary weekly and they are open on some holidays that other places would typically be off (but keep in mind there are paying members who expect to be able to work out almost anytime).

Advice to Senior ManagementOverall I had a good experience with upper management, which could have been contributed to the fact I had a good sales team and we were good performers so that kept any heat off of us.

Amount of Work Done and Amount paid is incredible

Assistant Manager (Former Employee)
Brooklyn, NY

I worked at Bally Total Fitness

ProsWell if you know how to sell effectively and your lazy .. its the greatest place to be there.. you get base pay and commision... you spend hours not really doing anything but youhave to act like your workin... i was the best sales person at my location and i barely did any work.. SWEET

you also have access to the facility... i lost 40 lbs bc of ballys.. cant complain

Consyour just as good as your last sale.... if your gym is having a bad day ... steer clear and make sure your bein seen doing work......members dont really show respect but then again you can threaten to revoke their memberships in which i used that technique and i always get an apology ..lol

Advice to Senior ManagementMake sure your on top of your game... if your a great sales person .. role play with your employees so that they can carry the club..

Not learning their lessons

Operations Manager (Former Employee)
Miami, FL

I worked at Bally Total Fitness

ProsPay VERY good compared to the industry; generally had a good work life balance; decent benefits for the industry; was given a lot of independence to improve my club.

ConsCompany HAS NOT leanred from their past mistakes, company needs to either reduce or eliminate the contracts. Customer service extremely poor on a national level. Need to lose the mentality that they can "sell" their way to financial success. Too much focus on getting people to sign on the dotted line and not enough attention paid to facility upkeep (maintenance & janitorial) or customer service. Not sure they can survive long enough to stay in business

Advice to Senior ManagementEliminate almost all of your regional and district managers; they have an archaic way of thinking that will doom the company to failure. Reduce your sales force and change the focus of club staff to improving customer service. Bring in GM's with an Operations or Customer service background. Most clubs (except for new clubs) should only have 1 or 2 sales people; place the savings into your customer service and facilities management budgets. Realize that you can't remain competitive with the mind set that is currently in place in the company. Develop your personal training teams.

bally is a decent place to work

Personal Trainer (Former Employee)
Huntington Beach, CA

I worked at Bally Total Fitness

Prosthe time flexibility and everyday is never the same. you have the freedom to set your own hours and work as much and as long as you want. The pay is pretty decent as long as there is a constant supply of clients to train. you don't have to wear suits and a ties everyday to work. workout attire and tennis shoes is all you need. you meet all sorts of people from different backgrounds and walks of life. there is always something to talk about at ballys because everyday holds a different surprise. never a dull moment working at bally

Consbally does not we well at assisting trainers. the patrons are absolutely crazy and are very demanding and complains just about everything.
