I have been working at Banfield Pet Hospital

    Pros

Privately held, good business model. Great people that want to do the best for the pets and people they serve.

    Cons

Very slow to innovate, systems are very clunky, Strategies and vision unclear. Complacent. Medicine can be spotty depending on the Dr. you see. Very difficult to get anything done in the organization, siloed.

I have been working at Banfield Pet Hospital full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Very well structured training programs starting this past year. The days are normally long hours and therefore can interfere with work/life balance. However, you tend to get a 40 hour work week in 4 days and have a few days off every week. Competitive wages.

    Cons

Company tends to be a revolving door, as we have a lot of interns and students passing through.

I worked at Banfield Pet Hospital full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

I worked at a high volume practice in an urban setting as a veterinary assistant. The clients came from a mixed socioeconomic background, with the majority being financially limited. The doctors at this hospital provided quality medicine and helped clients priorities services, diagnostics, and medical care for their pets. They prioritized patient care and treated their employees well. It was a very affirming work environment and work culture that emphasized team work and efficiency.

    Cons

There was a high turn over rate, so it seemed like the staff was constantly changing. Long hours and busy practice. The work and case load was not always split evenly. Had to push the "wellness-plans" and sometimes felt like a car salesman with pushing services and products to clients.

I have been working at Banfield Pet Hospital

    Pros

Fun work environment, great coworkers, endless learning opportunities. Working with sick and healthy pets & communicating with clients is rewarding. 3 free personal wellness plans, hospital and Pet Smart discounts are great. PTO and floaters holidys are pretty decent. Nice medical equipment.

    Cons

Upper level hospital management have to jump to the endless tune of "more revenue" for field leaders (who bonus off of said revenue). Beware if they decide they want you out they will do everything to find a way. Field managers have been observed saying some not so very nice things about hospital chiefs of staff and practice managers. Very little transparency in field directors and medical directors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of field directors and medical directors in favor of a more centralized, corporate office set of leaders. These middle men are akin to little Hitlers whenever the mood strikes. They cause friction and stress for hospitals, and do little more than collect a mighty paycheck and bonus off every hospital all the while calling for more and more money. Maybe they should go into politics...Let the hospitals manage themselves with corporate oversight. Have a good go to method for medical and fiscal support that is consistent for all hospitals. Imagine the money that would be saved if those useless field leaders were let go, never mind the increase in hospital morale!

    Pros

Good benefits, decent pay, nice people to work with, a company that is organized and does what it says.

    Cons

Management is overworked and therefore not every thing is done as timely as it could be with appropriate staffing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Banfield Pet Hospital full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The pay is fair, but the culture is great. Banfield spends a lot of effort in making sure associates are engaged and that they have opportunities for development. This is not a place for people that want to warm a chair and collect a paycheck.

Banfield continues to perform well despite an adverse market, and the variable pay (bonus) program can offset the lower pay.

    Cons

The paid time-off policies are sub-par.

The headquarters will be moving to Vancouver, WA in 2016.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The time-off accrual rate needs to be revised. I've seen too many good people get burned out too quickly.

    Pros

    Challenging environment, love helping pets.

    Cons

Sometimes late hours/weekends, not nearly enough pay for what's required. Corporate environment sometimes is a huge drawback.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay your employees more and treat them like you value them to get better people in and reduce high turnover rate.
