I worked at Bank of America as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

Just like any job on wall street, they work you very hard but pay you very well. For some, the long hours are worth the high salaries.

    Cons

Long hours, very competitive environment, solely focused on making money, not enough on work life balance. You can't really go an hour without looking at your blackberry or you could be in huge trouble.

    Pros

Pay was fair and in-line with the industry. Upward mobility was available despite the big corporate structure. Movement towards better work-life balance.

    Cons

Decisions and things move slow due to the big size of the company. Despite the merger with Merrill Lynch, the brand name still isn't up there with some of the top tier banks.

    Pros

Good benefits including 401k match, paid vacations and sick days etc, even for part time employees. Flexible and work with school schedule. Good starting pay.

    Cons

Constant changes in the company are hard to keep up with. Tellers don't get bonuses and aren't paid enough for all the responabilites that they are giveb. Very hard to have a life outside of work. Can be very stressful at times .

    Pros

Mgmt is competent and the work is highly intellectually stimulating.

    Cons

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize that there's often friction between senior analysts and associates and what they say about associates is not always accurate.

    Pros

Attentive management, evolving tech culture. Many opportunities to grow and learn.

    Cons

Past mergers and acquisitions left a wake of inefficient and incompatible technology, still being cleaned up. Teams can be highly virtual, just now migrating back towards a co-located structure.

Former Employee - Assistant Vice President - Senior Financial Analyst in New York, NY

I worked at Bank of America full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Solid benefits - 4 weeks vacations as an entry level employee (that may have changed). 3 months for both maternity and paternity leave. Ability to work from home. Work-life balance was easy to maintain. Most people worked about 9 or 10 hours a day in NYC.

Many opportunities to move within the company.

    Cons

Compensation is low compared to other firms in the industry. Bonuses we also low during the time that I was there (also a function of the economic environment).

The experience depends a lot on the manager. There are plenty of manager that haven't received sufficient training. The culture outside of Charlotte is weak. There is a culture clash between the various hub as a result of so many mergers.

Very hard to get things done in a timely manner. There are so many intermediary steps and approvals needed to complete anything.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on developing talent. Make sure compensation is on par with competitors.
