Current Employee - Junior Software Developer in New York, NY

I have been working at Bank of America full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Senior developers value your personal growth and encourage you to attend workshops / training. My manager even let me read textbooks at work (free online via techbus.safaribooksonline.com), as long as I still got my work done.

    Cons

Political friction between business and tech, and turf wars between individual tech teams. As a junior dev, I was spared from this.
Bizarre internal software development tools. Don't expect any technology you learn here to be transferable. Focus on learning to write clean, clear code.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Project Leads are so scared of their project not appearing to move forward that they trudge along with severe architectural problems. Enforce that all project plans have a "Pilot version" phase, so that the devs get a politically-free chance to re-architect the project.

Current Employee - Seniore Vice President, Treasury Solutions Officer in New York, NY

I have been working at Bank of America full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I've been in the Treasury space for nearly 20 years. I've worked at several other banks and appreciate the flexibility that Bank of America has offered. I have the ability to work hard, but also take the time needed to live life. I am respected and feel appreciated. In addition, I feel that there are opportunities avaialble to advance within this institution. Management is fair and supportive.

    Cons

With lots of regulations that are imposed on the Banking industry as a whole, there is a tremendous amount of reporting, adminsitrative duties and responsbilities to address that was not present in my prior roles at other Banks. It's not necessarily a "Bank of America" issue, but more and industry challenge.

Secondly, benefits are absolutely terrible. The amount that is paid by the employee (and family) is so costly that it makes me wonder if we're better off without it (God forbid). Again, this is not just Bank of America, but I certainly feel that more funds should be contributed by the Bank.

Retirement savings - Bank of America no longer has a pension plan for new employees. Employees are required to self fund retirement. This is a frightening concept for the future of our country knowing that the typical american is not a "saver". I wish this would be something that the Bank would re-instate. Even a moderate contribution can be helpful to the long-term health of our population.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

As menioned above, re-think the benefits and ways to offer a more (and less complicated) insurance offering to employees. Also, continue to listen (as you do) to the employees and take action.

    Pros

They have some very good people, and offer solid training and give a good work life balance. They provide a decent compensation.

    Cons

SOme of the people are not as good, and it really is important that you get in with the right group to maximize what the company can do for you and vice versa

    Pros

Very nice people, the work was interesting, and the managers were very nice and easy to get along with. Lots of contractors mixed in with permanent staff.

    Cons

Salary, lack of ability to move up. Heavy contractor presence made the office feel slightly transient.

I have been working at Bank of America full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Sane managers, reasonable hours and reasonable pay. All firms have good and bad managers but BAC seems to have a higher percentage of sensible human managers.

    Cons

Overly Breaucratic. Lots of caution to avoid the financial disasters of the past. This leads to lots of lists, reviews and audits. Its hard to see that they all have value.
