Barclays could be a great place, but its IB-Tehnology division is rapidly declining.

Software Developer (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at Barclays Capital full-time for more than a year

ProsSome great co-workers. Good location in mid-town Manhattan.
Reasonable hours- no 12hr work days most of the time.

ConsFor technology division- compensation and performance benefits are being squeezed down.
None to extremely small raise/bonus will be awarded, irrespective of performance.
Bad morale overall with threat of lay-offs always looming, causing extra stress.

Good manager, poorly managed company

Assistant Vice President (Former Employee)
New York, NY

I worked at Barclays Capital full-time for more than 3 years

ProsI had an awesome manager until they also let him go.

ConsUpper Managers treat employees like pawns. They never give any picture of the direction of the firm. They never try to make you believe in any purpose. Also a very political firm.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe less political. Promote people who don't try to "work the system"

Good place to start your career, but not much after that.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at Barclays Capital full-time for more than a year

ProsGood learning experience, develop the skills you need to launch your career anywhere else. High level of senior exposure.

ConsExtremely underpaid and overworked. Company culture and employee moral is almost non-existent, and there is constant turnover and redundancies. They need to recognize employees at all levels and compensate them for their hard-work, rather than only rewarding those at the top. The company will not change anytime soon...it will take at least 10 years to rebuild the company culture and make it a 'go-to-bank'.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf you want to boost moral and retain talent, pay your employees more.

Overall culture is okay, but compensation is very disappointed this year.

ProsEveryday dress down policy.
Most ex-lehman team has great working cultures.

ConsCompensation, and talend retention.
Unsuccessful location strategy and resource allocation.

Career Developmentally Challenged

Technology Analyst (Former Employee)
New York, NY

I worked at Barclays Capital full-time for more than a year

ProsCasual corporate environment; friendly and open environment; work-life balance encouraged; great company for performers that are not seeking further advancement.

ConsProject development is controlled from the top down with little transparency; stagnant workforce with constantly changing compensation strategy; salary increases and promotions are extremely hard to come by; frequent management changes at the top result in staff restructuring (i.e. unpredictable lay-offs for non-producing employees: corporate, technology, operations, anyone who does not "manage up").

Advice to Senior ManagementImprove talent recruiting, perform a single review/cull of existing staff and focus on generating current talent retention with improved mobility with salary increase and promotion incentives.

Less Reward for no or little work

Vice President (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at Barclays Capital full-time for more than 3 years

ProsThey tend to sugar coat everything and make everyone feel better
People are generally nice to work with and politics is not bad at all compared to other shops
There are a bunch of smart guys in Front office from whom you can learn a lot.

ConsOne the worst payers in the street ( especially if you stick with them for > 4 yrs or so in non front office functions).
Reward for performance in areas such as product control, operations , risk and IT is not great. So eventually people either leave or do nothing and become part of the system.
Most projects tend to be delayed and systems are antiquated compared to other top banks.
Preach internal mobility but make is impossible to happen in reality even you get an internal offer
Most Directors in infrastructure are non technical and just people managers with fancy ties.
Traders keep all the money ( almost 75-80% of the pie is for them)

Advice to Senior ManagementOvertime and Contractor compensation need to be cut by 30%. They make more money than full time staff.
Give your people more reward and increase internal mobility. Also use your top performers better. Incorporate their views, use them in decision making, give them some upside.

Product Control (Current Employee)

I have been working at Barclays Capital full-time for more than a year

Pros- Good Brand name
- Great place to learn
- Smart people
-Some mobility to different groups/departments

ConsHorrific compensation structure that is hindering the company's ability to retain talent. Analysts are pain OT, and most of them end up making more than AVPs (who don't get paid bonus).
- Very long hours for little pay
- Unreasonable deadlines (Directors want to look good so you are stuck in the office until midnight)
- Extremely stressful/ high pressure environment
- Many supports functions are being outsourced - poor job stability

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company
