    Advice to Management

A successful commercial bank struggling to stay in the investment banking business.

    Pros

The bank has a long and rich history. Its retail and commercial banking operations are doing okay.

    Cons

If you are contemplating a career at the investment banking division of Barclays, then you need to be aware of the following facts (The source of the facts can be googled easily): As of May, 2014, Barclays announced that it will cut 19,000 jobs by year 2016. (Source BBC News, Guardian) Of the 19,000 job cuts, 7,500 will be in its investment banking division. (Source Bloomberg, Yahoo Finance) Barclays was fined $450 million for its manipulation of the global benchmark interest rate (the LIBOR scandal). (Source USA Today, CNBC) Barcalys is currently under investigation for its manipulation of the global foreign exchange market. (Source Bloomberg, Guardian) The crucial issue, however, is that the return on equity at its investment banking division is a meagre 2.7% (Source Bloomberg, Barclays Annual Report), far below the bank's target of 12% and its other divisions. When the return of equity of its peer bank Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) reached such a low level, RBS decided to phase out its investment banking business over the next four years.

    Advice to Management

Barclays is welcoming a new Chairman Mr. John McFarlane who has a reputation of being a serious business manager (Source Wall Street Journal). The senior management needs to evaluate that reality that the bank's ill advised and poorly executed entry into the investment banking business is not exactly a success. The bank needs to devise a business plan for the investment banking division. The plan should be both sound in terms of business (saving bank in terms of cost) and fair to to its employees by giving them time to make transition in their careers.

    Pros

Compared to other investment banks, decent work/life balance.

    Cons

Since the bank announced last May that the investment bank will be shedding 7000 jobs, the mood has been bad. Morale is poor. Annual rankings force each manager to classify 10-20% of their direct reports as "needs improvement". Anybody that gets this ranking is let go. In other words, every manager has to let go of people every year. The number of scandals and regulatory issues Barclays is currently involves with is embarrassing and depressing. Bonuses were laughable or nonexistent.

    Advice to Management

Recognize the value the Investment Bank brings to the business. Stop blaming prior management for all current problems.

    Pros

Work/Life balance achieved through telecommuting, 4 weeks of vacation, holidays, package of benefits. 401(k) matching up to 6% of salary

    Cons

There is no proper human resource direction in technology area, jumping in various directions with the "workforce location strategy". Development process is hindered by multiple "red tapes", requirements for tons of unnecessary documents, etc.

    Advice to Management

No bank today can survive without proper technology - get some focus there, define practical goals, and follow on implementation. Finally, establish a proper "technical career pass" to preserve your investment in technical talents.
