I worked at Barclays as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Work with A-list clients on headline deals, great culture, helpful colleagues

    Cons

Exposure to management limited, career development not very highly valued, you feel like another cog in the wheel, etc

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Care about your junior employees more, they do the grunt work for you; pay more or you'll lose the best of the best to the boutiques

I worked at Barclays full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Really talented and all-around great people (for now).

    Cons

Very political - progress is slow and changes are usually too little too late. Lots of turnover - losing good talent due to frustration with the organization. HR promotion process makes no sense - is not based on meritocracy and contributions - and compensation is weak.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't just focus on cost-cutting and creating efficiencies - foster a company culture that makes people feel valued.

I have been working at Barclays full-time for more than a year

    Pros

DIrect managers are extremely caring and a joy to work for. Flexibility, boss is extremely understanding of all outside factors. Work/Life Balance provides opportunity to focus on family life. Down to earth colleagues make for a collegial environment. Independence to build, own and manage processes lets you make what you want of your role.

    Cons

Very bureaucratic, it takes forever to get an answer or an approval due to countless layers and endless mixed messaging. Extremely slow pace for anything.
Compensation was flat out bad and promotion process is inconsistent. No focus improving, just a focus on cutting costs. Very volatile organization with no stability due to lots of layoffs and a revolving door of employees. Communication is lacking as folks make decisions in isolation. Directors sit with their doors closed and many colleagues ignore emails and do not return voicemails.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Identify, mitigate then eliminate the extreme bureaucracy.

I have been working at Barclays full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Challenging work, intelligent colleagues, great benefits

    Cons

Outdated technology, limited developer control, unstable management and business units

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I'm obviously biased, but I think the banks should shift some of their focus away from traditional business units and look to excel technically. They risk losing talent otherwise.

I have been working at Barclays full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Bulge bracket infrastructure and experience.

    Cons

Double penalized by the U.K. and the U.S.; CEO who is not fit to run an investment banking business.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Benchmark what your 'U.S. competitors' are doing in terms of operating the banking business and the compensation. Also the CEO should be someone with an investment banking background.

    Pros

Smart driven people in front office functions
    Good work life balance

    Cons

Like most banks heavily hampered by new regulation
Some people in support roles (middle/back office) can be difficult to work with - uncooperative, unmotivated, restricted by policies and procedures
Systems are bad, getting better, but very slowly
