I have been working at Barclays full-time for more than a year

    Pros

This place is good if you want to gain some banking experience. The projects are led by a competent technical team in the UK.

    Cons

The work environment here is not too good. Basically the entire management here is from Verizon. It is a pretty well known fact that Verizon has pretty bad reputation in the Dallas region as far as work culture goes. Its pretty much the same here.

This place has way too many redundant managers who seem to have gotten here just because they were all friends with each other at Verizon. The main management for the projects is in the UK which does a good job of maintaining a process. The Plano center mainly develops the requirements passed down from the UK, it does not have projects of its own. The managers here have zero control over the timelines, deliverables, new features, etc. This also means that this place is at the mercy of a projects from the UK. This has resulted in many layoffs recently as a result of there being less work and budget cuts. They are now also outsourcing most of the work to TCS in India. This is not the best place to be for job security.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management team needs to be overhauled. More emphasis needs to be given to coming up with better processes to make the job of developers more predictable. Managers should be more open about things instead of being secretive.

I have been working at Barclays full-time

    Pros

Fast-paced work environment, interaction with some very smart individuals, opportunities to work on interesting transactions.

    Cons

The culture can be very challenging, and there is very little work life balance present with long hours being the norm. The work environment can also be very bureaucratic.

    Cons

A lot of favoritism and management may treat employees like children. And employees get paid on an event basis.

I worked at Barclays full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Opportunity to experience different groups
Great training and continued education courses to take.

    Cons

The moral of the firm and specifically in Operations was always negative. Too many groups are being outsourced.

Placement process is a little shady but if you know what you want just go after it and speak directly to the appropriate manager asap.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put in place a more transparent promotion process. People are there for 10+, 20+ years and they are still analysts... doesn't make sense.

I worked at Barclays part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Can't find one, really...The best I can say is that they know what is not working. They have no real clue on how to fix it

    Cons

Internal politics. Confused strategy. Execution is all over the place. Inability to recognize that some people have to be let go.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You have to decide once and for all if quality of business processes are more important than cost cutting measures. You can do one and then the other. You can also do both at the same time but it requires mature business processes and willingness to work at making things happen. Listen to the field people in your other branches. London is not always right, nor are the people there particularly efficient and committed to the company's best interest.

I have been working at Barclays full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

The quality of employee is high, some great business leadership in some areas, eg Rates.

    Cons

Very confused restructuring is occurring in an effort to save cost, will likely result in thousands of layoffs in late 14.
Compensation is well below market, particularly for employees who have stuck with Barclays for 3+ years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reduce the workforce rather than pretending restructuring can drive out cost.
