I worked at Bare Escentuals part-time

    Pros

Pay is above average for retail. Great product! Company focus is the customer, not necessarily on sales. You get some gratis.

    Cons

As a keyholder, you are told to "coach" the staff level below you as well as above you. If your upper management is not receptive, it can hurt you, so you learn to not "coach" them. And you are not given any sort of "set of tools" in order to coach the level below you, so if they do not receive it well or choose to ignore you, you just have to deal with it. You can try your upper management but they don't end up talking to your lower level staff, most likely because it is just a popularity contest at Bare Minerals. So you are stuck in the middle and are the bad guy because you are told to keep "coaching" the staff as a part of your job. Ugh.
Also, Keyholders and BA's do as much work making sales for the company as the store managers but get pennies in a bonus compared to them.
Weekends are ridiculous in such a small boutique. There are only 2 registers; you are also expected to talk with every customer, sit them down, write up a profile sheet for you and them, and ring them out.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give the keyholders a way to discipline or stand their ground, so they are not walked all over by the BA's. There also seems to be no regulation on how well the upper management runs the store or their district. I think bonuses should be based on customer experience (including the employees experience) and not on sales.
Don't be so stingy with your gratis. In order to sell the product the worker bees must use it.

    Pros

Great Product!!! Discount was awesome and store associates are amazing! Great place to build up your cosmetic experience. Great place to work as long as you are NOT in management!!

    Cons

Company cant seem to make up their mind. Ever since Leslie left, it has lost the "Girlfriend experience" . Seems like they are all about the big sell now and no longer have a personal approach to building the business.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop giving unrealistic goals to management and stop changing "The Vision" every other month! Hire and retain supportive members of management that allow open lines of communication and support associate honesty, instead of catty-double talking, two-faced managers/district managers that will lie and throw you under a bus in order to get what they want!

I worked at Bare Escentuals full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The company is very client focused and looking to sell products based on the person's needs, not the store volume needs.

    Cons

The company is still new and still learning how to grow into the multi-billion company they could be. The pay, communication, and management tools/support are still lacking in consistency making training, coaching, and tracking success/opportunity difficult and time consuming.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find consistency in product/training materials. Ensure communication is sent and received by the specific employees targeted. (one email for everyone but the store manager to share can breakdown functions if emails aren't received by all targeted employees). Begin to enable stores to have an allowance they may use to promote and market the products comfortably, additionally the store can obtain needed emergency office supplies or supplies not on the normal order list.

I worked at Bare Escentuals full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

I loved the "girlfriend" atmosphere. Some of my closest friends are women I met while working there. The product is truly amazing. I would not purchase any other product. The company itself is amazing and they offer great training, incentives, perks and so on.

    Cons

Working in a company where the majority of employees leaves for some cattiness, as well as that high school atmosphere where everything is a popularity contest. In my personal boutique it was difficult trying to balance out my store manager who was selfish and self serving. She took advantage of the lower employees and forced them to work holidays while she took off, and would not allow them the time they requested off. As the assistant manager she had not allowed me to grow in my management position. Also the new district manager did not like me or the fact that I was friends with all of my employees so she managed to get me to leave. My poor experience is central to only one store. The company itself is great and if I could I would go back in a heartbeat.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Always be fair.
Don't take advantage of your employees.
    Always lead by example.
Delegate managerial tasks to others rather than keeping it for yourself to do. Your management team needs to be able to grow as well.

    Pros

fun company culture, good makeup discount

    Cons

To many meetings so it's hard to get work done, high employee turnover in home offices, micromanaged from the top, hard to get new ideas passed, lots of internal politics around promotions and advancing, departments tend to work in silos and have trouble communicating internally.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Empower your teams vs. telling them how to run their business/dept.

I worked at Bare Escentuals part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    - Good pay for a retail position ($9-$11/hr depending on experience)
    - Gratis (free full-size products occasionally)
    - 50% discount
    - Opportunity for monthly bonuses if the store makes goal
    - Opportunity for advancement
    - You get to apply makeup to customers, FUN!
    - Full-time benefits are very good

    Cons

    - Part-time benefits are TERRIBLE and do not meet the minimum requirements of the ACA for acceptable coverage.
    - Do not get sick ever....EVER!!
    - Personal sales goals could be a con if you are not comfortable in sales. You do not just show people makeup and check them out...you are expected to sell the crap out of that stuff
    - Only the manager and assistant manager get full-time hours
    - My least favorite experience of being employed here was the politics. There should be a zero tolerance policy set by management regarding gossiping and passive aggressive bullying. There is not. In fact, about half of management was involved with or fueled the gossip. Even if you never whisper a word about someone else, you will not be safe! I feel like this is a common problem in retail and it only takes a few bad apples to ruin the whole bushel.

If it weren't for the petty gossip, favoritism and clique-culture of this store, I would have given 5 stars.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management should cultivate healthy working relationships, not feed the fire. Lead by example and stop gossip as soon as you hear it...especially among management. It is a small store and everyone knows everything that is being said.
