I have worked here for five months.

Bookseller (Current Employee)
West Chester, OH

I have been working at Barnes & Noble part-time for less than a year

ProsGreat atmosphere and amazing co-workers. Excellent employee discounts.

ConsUsual retail problems, although the clientele is perhaps more laid back and friendly than in other retail situations.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to develop and coach employees.

Barista

Barista (Former Employee)
Tempe, AZ

I worked at Barnes & Noble part-time for more than a year

ProsGreat company. They really care about their employees and offer great benefits. Great people to work for and with, had an awesome experience.

ConsThe pay rate is a little low, and full time is 30 hours (it's hard to get too much more).

Love my job!

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Barnes & Noble

ProsNice environment, the management actually cares about employees, flexible hours, our bookselling team is a TEAM. If a project isn't done you can always count on a peer to help you out.

ConsThe company itself is fine. It's just the normal cons of working retail like: holidays, rude customers with unrealistic expectations.

Advice to Senior ManagementOur management team rocks!

Absolutely great

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Barnes & Noble as an intern

ProsYou get at least a weekend off a month. You can learn as much as you want to.

ConsThere are many areas to learn. Alot of back house stuff that no one tells you about.

Advice to Senior ManagementUpper management is pretty good. Store level management seems to lack communication. Lots of people working at different times. It's hard to cascade information.

A company that values you, while you work with product you love.

Store Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at Barnes & Noble full-time for more than 10 years

ProsIf you love books, movies, media, etc., you cannot go wrong working at Barnes & Noble. Co-workers are pleasant, are a similar culture fit, and truly care for you personally. B&N values employees, cares for your personal and professional development, and wants you to have a life outside of work. I truly feel appreciated, and at home.

ConsIf there were any cons, it's the same that you would find at any retail place.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep thinking forward. I feel you have worked hard to keep up with the changing face of brick-and-mortar, and have worked hard to integrate us into your overall vision for the company. Keep it up, and we will, too!

One of the most memorable experiences!

Merchandise Manager (Former Employee)
McLean, VA

I worked at Barnes & Noble full-time for more than 5 years

ProsThe fellow booksellers altogether make a dream team!

ConsMaintenance of public facilities, unfortunately, had been chronic and regrettable.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease upgrade the public facilities . . . especially in high traffic domains (i.e. malls).

Fantastic

Cafe Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at Barnes & Noble full-time

ProsPeople, Work/Life Balance and Benefits. I really enjoy the team I work with. Even though I am salaried, I don't get called into work unless it is an emergency and the benefits are awesome!

ConsI really don't have any cons except that moving up in the company pretty much requires a move unless time isn't a concern for ya.

Awesome company

Bookseller (Former Employee)
Glassboro, NJ

I worked at Barnes & Noble part-time for more than a year

ProsIf you like books, this is the best job to have. If not, it's still fun to work at. The customers are either really polite or really interesting. Plus, at the one I worked at, they let you play with the Nooks to get more acquainted with the interface.

ConsPay. Also, I worked at a college location, so the summer months were unbearably slow.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf an employee has done their zoning and organized displays already, don't get mad if they stand around by the desk. There should always be someone there anyway to help customers. Also, during the summer months, I think it'd be fair to let employees read new releases while it's slow. You can't have people selling books they know nothing about!
