    Pros

Great culture, some of the best coworkers out there. Used to be a lot of opportunity for upward mobility and care for employees with health or other considerations.

    Cons

The economy has forced a lot of those benefits to slow down, and sometimes entirely stop. Corporate office now micromanage stores, rather than allowing the quality and knowledge of their local booksellers to shine.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember to support your employees, they are what will make your company successful.

Former Employee - Head Cashier in Scottsdale, AZ

    Pros

At my Barnes & Noble, everybody was friendly. The company was oddly insistent on selling their e-readers at the time. They do pay extra if you have relevant experience or speak a second language, so don't be afraid to ask for more than the minimum at the interview if you fit either of these categories.

    Cons

Benefits are terrible, compensation is pretty awful. The perks of checking out hardcover books is excellent, but the actual employee discounts are terrible and don't stack with existing sales.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would recommend paying employees more. Sure, it is retail, but it is somewhat specialized. If you want to create an atmosphere where customers can walk in and ask knowledgeable sales reps about what books they might be interested in, you have to attract and retain people who read books. Your wages do not help accomplish this.

    Current Employee - Music Seller

    Pros

    Worked with my schedule
    Flexible
    Loved my coworkers
    Relatively supportive management

    Cons

No benefits for part-time and full time benefits kinda sucked
    No real room for advancement
    Bad pay
    Rather restrictive rules
    Skeleton crew
    Unrealistic expectations

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your staff. They're dealing with this day in and day out. If they keep saying something isn't working, maybe it is time to change it.
