Former Employee – worked at Battelle Memorial full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – Lots of perks - gym, generous vacation/PTO plan, 401K, pension - many of which have gone by the wayside at other companies. The work is interesting, but exposure to new things can be limited in certain groups. Many (but not enough IMHO) smart people who are willing to share experiences and give guidance.
Cons – Everyone is made very aware of the their level on the food chain. Administrative Support is not well regarded. While some staff (non-administrative) are treated with respect and encouraged every step of the way - administration is often passed over and pushed aside like furniture. Constant talk about "inclusion" and "engagement", with no real action to make these things a reality. Work assignments seem to be made and changed with impunity, affecting responsibilities, potential career path and job satisfaction. The constant jockeying for "position" and "credit" seems to undermine any efforts to create a stable and satisfying work environment. Depending upon where you may be in the food chain, the job you were hired to do can and probably will be changed without your input or buy-in. Training and career counseling do not appear to be offered to everyone equally, with many options not shared at all with administrative staff.
Advice to Senior Management – More action regarding inclusion and engagment that goes beyond pot luck lunches and endless meetings about inclusion and engagement. More recognition of efforts and accomplishments of administration and everyone beyond the "golden" few that are lorded over no matter what they do.

Former Employee – worked at Battelle Memorial full-time for more than 10 years
Pros – Great people to work with - no back stabbing; exciting technologies and capabilities to tap into to solve problems, challenging projects to work on.
Cons – You will thrive on your own capabilities, not many resources to help if you are struggling -- sink or swim environment. However, the talented people there do very well.

Current Employee – been working at Battelle Memorial full-time
Pros – The company itself is great. It has very good benefits plus there is a pension program in addition to a fantastic 401(K) plan with Vanguard.
Cons – When I first came on board with the company's office in Arlington, VA, it was a much different place from what it is now. The focus seemed to be more on taking care of people and, as a non-profit company, less on the skullduggery one might expect from 'for profit' companies. Unfortunately, as time went by and I had the opportunity to peer behind the veil, I found that staff members MUST ingratiate themselves to Management in order to have any hopes of moving up. It is favoritism that will get you places, not merit.
Advice to Senior Management – Take some leadership classes; stop acting as though you are Battelle aristocracy; you expect staff members to do far too much Company business on their own time; recognize staff members for their merit and make such recognition meaningful; it would be inspirational to have a manager who knew something about their staff; the staff review / performance evaluation / career development roadmap are nothing more than a paper drill with little or no impact.

Former Employee – worked at Battelle Memorial full-time for more than 3 years
Pros – I really enjoyed working around some of the brightest people in the world and working on projects of national importance. The technology, science, and exposure to real world problems is first rate.
Cons – Big fish in a small pond - there's nowhere else really to job shop against, and they know this. Salaries are pretty good once you get a few bumps, but people work here for decades, so promotions are slow. Layers of bureaucracy drag some people down.
Advice to Senior Management – Find a way to mitigate the "old boys network" that drives everything at the ALD and Division level and your employees will be much more productive and profitable.
