Good people, great benefits, challenging work (Crystal City Office, Arlington, VA)

Senior Communications Specialist (Former Employee) Arlington, VA

ProsCompetitive salary, great benefits, cordial environment, a lot of internal and external training opportunities, ownership of one's job, convenient location, annual bonuses

ConsMLK Holiday not recognized, not a lot of room for growth, job stability is always top of mind as contracts come and go due to funding issues with the clients

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Battelle was a great place to work and build relationships.

IT Coordinator (Former Employee) Columbus, OH

ProsI worked for Battelle for about 13 years and have built many lasting friendships. My hours were fairly flexible and the work was the most rewarding. Knowing that what you are doing is contributing to the greater good of mankind is a reward in itself. Battelle offers a pension even if you don't retire from there.

ConsThe benefits are not the best. There was no compensation for good work, although there was a 2-3% annual increase. I have found many other companies offering more competitive pay and better medical insurance.

There is constant reorganization. At least once a year there are lay offs and sometimes a month later they will start bringing in new people. Everyone is fearful of losing their job.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease consider moving talent to other areas of Battelle, rather than just laying people off.

    A very mixed bag

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsFirst class people, clean environment, invigorating innovative atmosphere, challenging work

ConsSince Jeff Wadsworth assumed leadership about 6 years ago he has totally trashed its historic culture, discarded all the ideals that made Battelle great, and remolded Battelle into "just another ordinary big company" that is run more by bean counters than by visionaries. He has discarded Battelle's former focus on the long term and has replaced it with a beancounter's (or freshly minted MBA's) fixation on the near term; now Battelle hires and fires practically on a project basis; it has been, and still is, discarding scores of people with deep knowledge and experience that would be practically irreplaceable in many difficult new projects....... all in the interests of keeping an attractive short term financial balance sheet. The unique pride that employees once had in the Institute have been lost along with morale. Sad.

Advice to Senior ManagementOpen your eyes. Look at what you are doing to your people and how you are limiting your future!

    Would have stayed longer.

    Senior Technician (Former Employee)

ProsGreat company values. Diverse training and technical resources. If you can work in a small office you can obtain big company benefits with small company working environment.

ConsQuality of benefits is declining. Company is reducing its skilled workforce in the area of technical production and utilizing more contractors.

    Good experience

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Columbus, OH

ProsVery interesting company and interesting work. Decent pay and terrific work/life balance.

ConsBenefits including vacation, 401k, bonuses and pension have all been reduced or eliminated over the last few years. This used to be a great place to work. Very secure jobs, but not great anymore. They have laid off 100s of people over the last couple of years.

Very slow moving company to get things done. A lot of bureaucracy.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry reducing bonuses for everyone instead of just eliminating them entirely at some levels.

High end comprehensive solutions not valued by short sighted government contracting officials.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Columbus, OH

ProsNonprofit, no shareholders to satisfy, profits go to solve Man's problems (by law), high ethics, caring and genuine CEO, good life work balance upheld by most managers and leaders, unparalleled staff benefits in this industry build loyalty and recruitment of the best, salaries a bit higher than average, more of a team work organization compared to other government contractors.

ConsHigh ethics results in honest bids where Battelle will never bid too low and recoup via change orders, unparalleled staff benefits results in higher costs and inability to compete effectively for cheap, short-sighted government solutions, lack of internal investment to grow, mature and be competitive in a number of areas to include data analytics, cloud computing, and predictive analytics.

Advice to Senior ManagementInvest internally to grow signature business line capabilities.

A lot to show, but need more loyalty

Threat Analyst (Former Employee) Arlington, VA

ProsGreat benefits, strong reputation, talented employees

ConsBenefits being drawn down, reputation a little tarnished in the area I worked due to some lackluster managers, and need more effort to retain employees

Advice to Senior ManagementEnsure managers produce. My manager was overall very good (though liked to think he could override policy), but a number of folks I worked with had to carry their managers, while watching those managers get credit for work they didn't do.
