    Miserable excuse for a company.

    Beauty Specialist (Former Employee)

ProsMost of the employees were wonderful, caring individuals. I could go to work and be with friends.

    Good exposure to products

Great job if you're in high school and need some spending money. Don't expect to pay the bills with this one.

The clientele was tolerable. I only got screamed at by a few customers during my time there.

ConsManagement does not support their employees. If the employee doesn't fit into their little clique, looks different or is an "independent thinker", they are abused until they're forced to leave and pushed out. If you express your discontent, expect to be argued with by immature and poorly trained management.

They pick and choose the rules they want to follow, whether it is dress code or protocol.

If you want to move up in the company, expect them to drag their feet, lie to you, and make you feel guilty. If you want to go to school, even if it's something that would benefit the company (cosmetology, business,) expect that to be even more of a hassle. They may even offer to demote you after you've devoted your life to them!

The pay is abysmal. Employees that work hard, that are there 40+ hours a week and are passionate and devoted to their work, make barely or at minimum wage. They make the same amount as teenagers in high school that apply their makeup in the mirror all day.

The decor is dated, and tacky. The polyester vests straight out of the 80's that they make you wear are cheaply made, and if they get ruined, which they do, quickly, expect to be charged $50+ out of your paycheck for a new one.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to your employees. Learn to identify quality employees. Raise wages and you might not have to hire a whole new staff every few weeks because so many people have walked out. Learn to respect people. Get some new, updated, modern decor and you'll probably get more clientele.

    Absolute Nightmare

    Salon (Current Employee)

ProsRun, apply to Great Clips, anywhere really. There aren't any pro's..

Consvelop the potential in others. That they are all about the growth of new stylists. love new stylists, they can take advantage of those stylists.
Second, there is no company training. Until you find out you have broken a rule. And those rules and policies are complete whims of the overly moody managers.
The pay is horrendous. They have minimum wage as a fall back they hate pay, but you have to make those hours. If I have anything good to say, it's spend your money and time elsewhere.
Not a ppace to build a longtime career. The salon is an afterthought.
The inly products I can use are products customers return, already used.
Sanitation equipment is broken. Nothing is sanitized....ever.
I have so much to say it isn't even funny. None of it gets better.

Advice to Senior ManagementMost stylists are not designed to be managers. Those are skill sets. You cannot run a salon like Nordstroms or a retail place.
Managers are difficult to find when you need them.
Open door policy should mean employees are heard. Someone actually listens.
    No dedicated retail manager
    No dedicated salon manager
The decor of the salon is grotesque, every client mentions it.
If you give feedback, it isn't arguing or oppositional, constructive criticism goes two ways.
If you bring up a point of error on the part of a stylist, and the stylist tries to discuss the situation, yoir managers shouldn't talk over them and be insulting.
I have never worked so hard to be treated so badly.
    F.y.I
Stylists ARE NOT janitors. Hire somebody to scrub your walls and baseboard. Minimum wage doesn't begin to cover what you ask your employees to do.

    awful

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Kansas City, MO

Prosworked with a lot of girls in their early twenties, made a lot of friends, good discount on services and products.

Consthis company is a joke. believe nothing that management tells you because odds are it is a false promise. I originally applied for a shift manager position since I had previous experience in a salon and day spa as one and was told that my 3 years of experience werent enough. was offered a gss position and told that I would be promoted within 6 months of working there because they like to hire from within. After being there for about an awful year, i decided to ask about the shift manager position the store had open. I was told I wasnt even being considered for the position because " no one assumed I would want it." After interviewing for the position with the regional manager, another girl was hired who had no management experience whatsoever and was fresh out of school. The reasoning being that we needed someone with a technical license to be a manager. Nowhere was that listed in any job requirements for management that they hold a technical license. More like they wanted someone who wasnt 6 months pregnant like my self. As a gss I would work 40 hours a week on my feet with no complaints, cover other shifts and do anything and everything that management needed or asked for. Needless to say that shift manager only lasted 3 weeks before they realized someone with no experience shouldnt be in management. Its more like a babysitting job really. Stylists think they run the store. Defy management if they dont like them. its all a popularity contest. Nothing but immature employees from the general manager to the css. A lot of backstabbing especially from management.

Advice to Senior Managementpay your employees more. there wouldnt be such a high turnover if you offered a competitive salary. $9 an hour for a shift manager position? thats a joke. I would suggest going through your stores and "cleaning house" you need to weed out those so so managers bc they are ruining your company.

Majorly disappointing experience, especially since I was told one thing in the interview, but the truth was another.

    Licensed Massage Therapist (Former Employee)
    Avon, IN

ProsFairly laid back atmosphere, allowed to work independently

ConsMassage services are underpriced so Massage Therapists are underpaid and Beauty Brands takes too big of a cut, not to mention- isn't capable of providing enough repeat business due to their first time client special which only brings in the penny pinchers (who rarely tip if they tip at all), not potential long-term clients, so it's impossible to make a living there.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagers need to know the pay for positions they're hiring before making offers and promises they can't keep to new employees.

    Worst place I've ever worked.

    CSS (Former Employee)
    Chandler, AZ

ProsThe discounts were nice. 50 percent on services like hair cuts, colors, pedicures, waxing etc. 35 percent on products. Fun people to talk to. Learned a lot about hair and beauty products.

ConsThe managers did absolutely nothing. They were total jerks and crack heads. Paid practically nothing and given no hours. Ridiculous dress code and expectations of perfectly faced store and vacuumed carpets. Bad music all the time playing. Short breaks for employees, but managers could smoke every 5 min if they wanted.

Advice to Senior ManagementThey need to screen their management better. Managers not helpful, not friendly, and all smokers and crack heads. Pay me more to work in a boring, lame, horrible place.

ProsGreat discount on products and services.

ConsPoor management that would talk about employees behind their back and played favorites. Catty women!

Pay is a JOKE, UNPROFESSIONAL, and mgmt takes advantage of associates

    Shift Manager (Former Employee)

ProsFree stuff/great salon and spa discounts- probably the only reason people would ever dream of staying.

ConsPAY SUCKS and is completely unequal. Too many expectations for not enough pay. Hours are a slap in the fact, under appreciated, upper mgmt doesn't give a crap about you. Gossip like you wouldn't believe. Sometimes I would work a full 40 hrs others I would work 20/wk. Ridiculous how it fluctuates

Advice to Senior ManagementHow about learning to pay your employees more than minimum wage; then you wouldn't have such a high turn over rate. Do a better job of searching for upper mgmt applicants and don't just settle on the first idiot that walks through the door. PAY MANAGERS MORE, THEY WORK THEIR BUTTS OFF. Also, the District Manager/ Home office needs a reality check and to get her head out of the clouds. There's too much of an unrealistic emphasis on sales. You're really are just a number at this establishment, which is why they pay people the lowest number they possibly can. I've seen the store nationally bring in well over 100k daily and they still pay sh*t. Constantly hounding people about why they are on commission and getting clients in and upselling CONSTANTLY to make the company more money with little thought on the people actually doing the work. I understand it's a business, but calm down, it's just beauty on the outside and that business is about as ugly as you can get on the inside.

    Very Disorganized

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsLearn about retail store and salon as well as makeup and skin care

ConsManagement makes promises they don't keep regarding promotions, refusal to hire management from within and brings in people who know nothing about how to treat their employees, bad management habits.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more professional in how you treat your employees who actually work very hard for the company.

    Worst Place to Work

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsFlexible Hours & Schedule. Discounts on Products. Health, Dental & LIfe Insurance.

ConsNo advertisement for the Spa at all. Most customers think that this company sells products only, which makes the pay horrible for the Salon & Spa. Upper & Lower Management (Includes the District Manager) treat their employees horrible. Constant Drama within the Management Team. When busy which is very rare breaks or lunches on a 7 to 8 hour work day is non existant. Constant customer complaints to employees about the Upper Management. Vacations are a joke, they find ways around letting the employees actually have a real vacation. Management is very rude around customers to the employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet rid of the Upper Management, including the District Manager and get some people that actually want the employees to excel. Advertise Advertise about the Salon & Spa!!!
