    I worked at Bechtel

    Pros

There is a lot of training that they do to make sure that they are current with today's global policies.

    Cons

Working along side a mentor that does not even bother to acknowledge you or even try to help you learn.

I have been working at Bechtel full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The benefits are decent (no pension) and the atmosphere is very laid back. The company has been around for ever and has no risks of being taken over.

    Cons

not a lot of opportunity for progression.
the company is not growing very quickly
very old school way of running business

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give some of the younger guys an opportunity to progress their careers. Management expects college hires to be a sharp and skilled as the guys they're hiring in oil and gas but wont shell out the change for them.

I worked at Bechtel full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Pay rates much higher than competitors. Benefits were excellent as was the retirement plans. Life on the road was well compensated in living allowance or pr diem but no work life balance fostered by Co.

    Cons

Sub standard managers de motivated the team and lowered morale. Higher pricing to accommodate fat middle management rather then being more competitive caused loss of market share in certain I business units. Working in the telecom sector has most folks laid off by now as their major customer found more competitive vendors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep your no-show managers off the GM bottom line and give the savings back to those who work the hardest. Recognize and train the future managers working in your midst. Toss the old boy network mentality and embrace change. Stream line your processes!

    I worked at Bechtel

    Pros

Benefits, international opportunities if your life allows it

    Cons

Old fashioned management, not good for millenials, slow job growth and promotions, being a construction company 80% of the workforce barely passed high school. The smart folks are either in the corporate offices winning more work or on bad projects which have gone south.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Time to change old fashioned thinking. Encourage better work-life balance.

I have been working at Bechtel

    Pros

Global, lots of opportunities to learn

    Cons

Can be stressful, and sometimes size makes it impossible to deal with so many ways of doing the same thing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop moving people around with no experience into a certain position just because they are done at a project site.

I have been working at Bechtel full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Good pay and 401k match

    Cons

They are not very employee friendly, an example is they do not authorize employees to telecommute without completing a formal request and having the business unit president approve it. Not much flexibility or feeling of trust by management.

    I worked at Bechtel full-time

    Pros

    - great benefits and salary
    - good work life balance
    - they care about their employees and are supportive of any needs
    - great reputation in the construction industry

    Cons

    - recently, the projects/positions are scarce
    - not a lot of growth in the US
    - tasks subdivided among disciplines with poor hand-offs; work walled off making it difficult to get things done
    - good ole boy network with poor promotion decisions
    - no long-term planning by upper management, rather rash decision and last minute reactions

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - keep the benefits, salary, and work life balance going
    - make sure to plan years ahead and not just react
    - get to know the employees and promote from within rather than hiring out
    - promote those who truly understand the network not those who can "talk" more than show their knowledge
    - stop dividing the work so much making it difficult to get things done
    - bid smarter and learn from competition, not just submitting same bids over and over
    - cut the fat when certain employees aren't cutting it
    - diversify and don't rely on the same clients

I have been working at Bechtel full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Pride in making a difference, good compensation

    Cons

Lack of advancement opportunities, middle management at corporate need to recognize and develop talent that is overlooked because of an old school buddy system

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Great company and employees are proud to work here- but great employees get stale when left at remote projects with little opportunity to increase skills and value. Turnover will continue to increase if this is not addressed. Great places to work survey supports this opinion.
