I have been working at Bechtel full-time

    Pros

"Most people work a 9-80 schedule with every other Friday off"

Wealth of knowledge and experience. Ideal for a young engineers seeking professional mentorship.

    Cons

Hesitation to expose younger engineers to site or commissioning work. With the growing number of retirees, the company seems slow to groom more mid-level professionals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Seek better ways to transfer knowledge from seasoned engineers to younger ones.

    Working for Bechtel, construction perspective

    I worked at Bechtel

    Pros

Challenging projects across multiple industries in locations worldwide, you can gain exposure to multiple disciplines - within construction in field engineering or superintendent positions in different crafts such as civil, electrical etc, and outside construction with engineering, contracts, project controls etc.

    Cons

Always on road somewhere for project but this is typical for construction disciplines, which I am. Engineers have more opportunity to stay in a home office environment if that is what you want although they encourage site assignments as well to promote better understanding of what it takes to build a project.

    I worked at Bechtel full-time

    Pros

Bechtel is willing to take risks on employes in whom they have faith. Managers appreciate hard workers who complain little and keep their nose to the grindstone. Additional responsibilities and potential for advancement are offered to specific employees who perform. Others are left idle, mainly because they've proven unreliable. Mentors are provided and genuinely help and offer guidance. I also had access to Project Management who provided encouragement, insight into business practices and future plans.

    Cons

Although hard work is noticed and appreciated, it's not always rewarded monetarily. On projects there is an endless supply of urgent work and not enough hours in the day. Employees often suggest leaving the company and returning at a later date as a method of career advancement. Projects are cut to the bone and every dime is watched on every level.

    Pros

Great place to work. A lot of opportunity to grow and learn and step out of your comfort zone. This makes work more enjoyable.

    Cons

There are more politics involved in this company compared to others that I have worked for. Compensation is somewhat lacking.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember that your people are your greatest asset. Treat them as such. Compensate them fairly but remember to hold people accountable. Seeing employees getting perks when they do nothing is not good for morale!

I have been working at Bechtel full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Benefits are very good, 6% match on 401k and a 3% bonus to 401k each year for the last 6+ years.

    Cons

Management gives better promotions/benefits to employees at the main offices. Recent relocation to new main office gave no thought to relocation of employees especially in the increase in cost of living.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat employees on site jobs with the same consideration as employees at the main office, when classes are given in the main office need to use video conferencing to share information to sites.

I have been working at Bechtel full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Bechtel projects are always exciting and challenging. Bechtel promotes and compensates high performers who are willing to be flexible and goes beyond expectations.

    Cons

Only way to move up in Bechtel is working projects which means moving approximately every 2 to 3 years. Dealing with office politics at times can be overwhelming. At times significant mandatory overtime to get the job done. Not a good work life balance.

I worked at Bechtel full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Good benefits
    Plenty of vacations and holidays
    Flex time
    9/80 work schedule

    Cons

Bechtel is a project based company. (No project = no job)
When you are on the project you may not be allowed to attend training due to tight project schedule.
Bechtel try to minimize overhead cost then they will lay you off at the end of project.
Career development and training program is very limited.
Some benefits got cut over the time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote young people to get more responsibility.
    Develop training program.
    Invest in technology
Policy enforcement (sometime people does not get benefits as shown in policy as it require manager "approval")
