I have been working at Bell Nursery full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Being outdoors, working with plants. Great exercise. Independence.

    Cons

Little money for hard work. NO appreciation from management...upper only points out negatives. Expect you to work horrible long hours on Salary.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start appreciating and showing respect to long-time hard working employees. Bonuses and raises for those that work hard.

I worked at Bell Nursery full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Pro's short seasons. Not obligated to return.

    Cons

No benefits available-will deliberately keep you under 40 hours so your not offered benefits. Low hourly rate for very demanding work *physically and mentally). Not enough knowledgeable people to help customers. Excess waste! Forced to log out for lunch rather than work thru so no ot.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Instead of tossing merchandise into dumpsters or reducing to obscene amount, have "discount" section that is available at competitor's like Lowe's and Walmart! Also, when you are able to have employee's return for fall or 2nd year-give them more $$, recognize and appreciate them. Promote from within.

I have been working at Bell Nursery full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Product is beautiful and Home Depot is wonderful partners! Learning about flowers and shrubs very satisfying Customers are usually pleasant to work with.

    Cons

Senior management expectations very high and can be very hard to live up to in the allotted time given. One district manager in Philly particular difficult to work with. Lots of finger pointing, gossiping and back stabbing from management. High turn over in all personal.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Many people have complained about managements lack of people skills but always lands on deaf ears.

I have been working at Bell Nursery part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

-Home Depot management and staff are wonderful! They were warm and appreciated the work I did more so than Bell.
-Lots of hours, if you can handle them and the conditions
-Nice customers, product line is beautiful to be around
-Hours are very early in the morning (if that works for you) so I could balance another job, etc.
-Good summer job for college/h.s. students

    Cons

-Very little interaction/warmth from Bell people.
-Nothing is ever good enough or fast enough for them. I understand it is hard work, but they expect newcomers to be at the same pace and skill level as seasoned vets.
-A million hours or hardly any hours per week, schedule posted very late and subject to changes that were above the norm. I was told your 'out time' was optional and at their discretion. I was balancing another gig, so it was hard for me to stay and they would give me the cold shoulder when I had to leave.
-Hope you are a morning person, if you are a nite owl, this may not be your scene.
-Previous poster was correct about back stabbing, gossiping by mgt and above levels of Bell. (Not by the Home Depot)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your products are beautiful, well maintained. Can take a big cue from Home Depot staff on how to treat your staff.
