    I worked at BellSouth

    Pros

The job has decent pay, good benefits, and opportunity for overtime. Most of the time you are allowed to run your job.

    Cons

Criteria relating to job performance is driven by folks that know little about the job itself, based on need for numbers, not need for customers

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get real real numers to work with while evaluating employees; there needs to be a committment to the devewlopment and training of the employees.

I have been working at BellSouth full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

    Big budget projects
    Respected employees
    Treated employees well
    Job security (until AT&T)
Interesting industry (telcom, internet, wireless, TV)

    Cons

    Highly conservative "corporate" culture
    Some systems were antiquated
    Some procedures were nonsense
Some deadwood employees... but most OK

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hope Duane Ackerman is enjoying the new island he purchased with part of his $$ multi-million golden parachute. Thanks Duane for helping turn the telcom industry into a near monopoly via heavy consolidation/mergers and blowing up thousands of jobs for real people.

    I worked at BellSouth

    Pros

Great benefits, congenial atmosphere, interesting issues to work on. Benefits are amazing, and you can retire in your early 50s quite nicely if you make a career there. If you get high enough, you can have a great work-life balance, and they encourage civic involvement on company time.

    Cons

Advancement is more a matter of having an easygoing personality and avoiding conflict as it iis based on capability. If you point out problems and try to tackle them, you will be seen as a troublemaker. It's good for someone who doesn't want to put too much of themselves into their work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend your merger bonuses well and enjoy. IIt's a shame we had to be the ones eaten instead of the ones doing the eating, but our failed IPTV strategy and inability to get new products out the door sealed that fate.

I have been working at BellSouth

    Pros

The compensation, benefits, work environment, and the ability to work in any depatment in the organization at any location globally. They will train you to do any jobs in the company. The current CEO started as a technician in the field and worked his way up to CEO.

    Cons

There is no flexibility in scheduling. Bellsouth/Att does not care about you going to school, family, or immediate health. They want you to be at work everyday, with 12 hours of overtime weekly, and work 6 days a week if they can convience you to do so. No matter how valuable you really are, they will fire you or downsize a complete department without hesitation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to what employees are saying and try to help employees cope with difficult situations, even if you cannot change the situation. Do not act like every change is always good change.

Former Employee - Senior Technical Writer

    I worked at BellSouth

    Pros

Competitive Compensation; Climate of teamwork; The company provides lots of technical training and there are opportunities to advance your career.

    Cons

Culture was still 20th century in many ways, however, progress is being made. Now that the company is owned by AT&T, the work place is not as people friendly and has more of a "big government" feel.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better communication between upper management and employees needs improvement. Also, working to create more team building and off site employee events would improve morale.

    Former Employee - Services Technician

    I worked at BellSouth

    Pros

Overall the job was challenging at time but thats what make the job fun. no two jobs were alike. I learned a lot in my field of work and regardless of what people say the pay was good.

    Cons

Company should focus more on the customers than just numbers, they should also motivate workers the right way instead of offering prizes. thats just sending the wrong signal. Motivate first then technicians with the aptitude will perform.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management should seek technicians ideas and opinions instead of just implementing rules that keeps changing every few weeks. managers should ride with technicians randomly to and see first hand what we deal with on a daily basis with plant and customers
