Fun when running smoothly, Horrible during the holidays and re-organizations

Assistant Manager (Former Employee)
Tampa, FL

I worked at Best Buy full-time for more than 5 years

ProsFun co-workers and customers for the most part. Daily activities weren't overly demanding and could be completed with ease when you get into a rhythm.

ConsConstantly changing organizational structure, some employees (kids) don't care about their job and try to worsen anything they touch, very poor work/life balance and no time off during the holidays

Advice to Senior ManagementPut a system in place for weekends off for Assistant Managers. Working 60+ hours a week and not being able to have a weekend day off unless requested as vacation leaves no work/life balance.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Up and Down

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Best Buy

ProsEmployee Discount, medical, dental, vision. Great people. Adequate paid time off

ConsWork-life balance is non existent, not as community focused as we once were, etc.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagers are people to...they deserve time off and away from the store to recharge since they are already working at least 45 hours/week.

This was the first job I ever had that I disliked completely.

Mobile Sales Consultant (Former Employee)
Longview, TX

I worked at Best Buy as a contractor for less than a year

ProsThe employee discount was more than fair on certain things. There was little discussion about benefits because there was none, anything to do with office culture or how the store worked was "learned" through hours of computer testing done alone. It seemed silly to waste so much time on that seeing how I was a seasonal employee. Time would have been better spent explaining how their phone systems worked and where things were.

ConsDisorganization at every level. Instead of preparing for the Christmas rush they knew would be coming by strengthening the mobile sales team they already had, they hired a bunch of seasonal people who then had to be trained during the busiest time of the season - annoying for customers, new employees and regular employees. Also I was hired as part time and there were at least two weeks where I did not get one shift at all - most others I worked 8-15 hours. The hiring process itself was a total joke.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf you want a team environment and to stop what is killing many big box chains - internet buying - invest in your employees. Most of the people that worked there were part time or seasonal and had other jobs or were currently looking for another place to be. It might be cheaper to not give benefits but what you end up with is a lot of people who show up for the pay check, have no sense of customer service due in part to inadequate training and the fact that 10-15 hours a week is not something people usually feel really loyal about.

Not a happy employee

Retail Sales Consultant (Current Employee)
White Marsh, MD

I have been working at Best Buy part-time for less than a year

ProsAwesome co workers, you can pretty much be yourself, the discount is nice

ConsManagement, goals are too over the top even for a competitive person, no praise, hours are terrible for someone who works part time, the stores are usually dead.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive part timers more hours, some of us have families as well as bills to take care of.

CO loves to use the ax where he can

Home Essential Team Lead (Current Employee)
Indianapolis, IN

I have been working at Best Buy full-time for more than 3 years

ProsEmployees for the most part make for a fun working environment.

ConsManagers do not unleash the power of the employees, CEO has no consideration for the management who brought BestBuy back from the brink of closing which is why he fired sum 2000 mid level management personnel.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep doing what you are doing. To the CEO get your head out of you but and stop firing people who make you money.

Terrible ethics and integrity. This company does not care about its customers or employees. At. All.

Customer Service Representative (Former Employee)

I worked at Best Buy part-time for more than a year

ProsYou get paid real money
The store discount is pretty nice

ConsLie to customers
Get lied to by management
Directed by supervisors to lie to customers
Told by supervisors at store meetings that "All customers are stupid"
Push products or plans onto customers who have 0% interest in buying them
Never move up in the company regardless of how much you deserve it
No benefits unless you're full-time
Nearly impossible to become full-time if you start off part-time
Will be scheduled for 41.25 hours per week without ever being offer full-time
If you call in one day, you are unable to return to work unless you bring a doctor's note (for one day, not two or three)

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease stop telling your employees to lie, and please stop telling them that customers are stupid. It drags down store morale.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Best Buy part-time for more than a year

Prosbenefits were good, employee discount is always nice, lots of training through the computer system, They even had college tuition reimbursement

ConsThey had rigid availability standards, I didn't feel like promotions were fair as far as who was or was not considered for them.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop reducing labor on the floor or you won't have any employees left to serve customers
