Great Team atmosphere but to much pressure for a non commisioned evironment

Computer Sales Associate (Current Employee)
Alexandria, VA

I have been working at Best Buy part-time for less than a year

ProsGreat Team Members everyone is like family, made lots of new friends
Flexible (Except during the holiday Season)
Employee Discounts are pretty good
Certifications and Training Opportunities perfect for high school and college students with little to no experience

ConsTo much pressure for a non commissioned environment
Not flexible at all during the holiday seasons
Disconnect between Services and Sales leads to confusion and frustration from both associates and customers alike

Advice to Senior ManagementHonestly you’re going to push the fact that your “performance” based instead of commissioned based then make so it’s fair across the board. For example at my store you have hourly revenue goals set for 500$ which is not too high but then to turn around and award associates with an hourly sales revenue of 1500$ with 60 hours a week and others who make 400$ 20 per week is not right. Put quite simply Best buy is basically substituted the monetary incentive with work hours as an incentive which makes it next to impossible to be financial stable if one week you exceed your hourly revenue of 500$ minimum every day and the next week for whatever the reason, your struggling just to hit 350$. Part of the other problem I have with best buy is to is communication between departments, particular with geek squad and the sales floor. We need to before we get on the floor if there’s promo on GSP services to avoid the confusion and headaches of having customers pay regular price for a GSP bundle that is technically on sale. Perhaps the most pressing issue about this communication lapse is what specifically can and can’t be covered. I’ve seen associates on the sales floor tell customers that we cover accidental damage on up to 4 other devices with the GSP protection plans which is definitely wrong. To summarize, This is a very good company to work for however Upper management needs to decide do they want to have a commissioned based environment or not. Abandon this “performance” based environment strategy or at the very least make changes to regulate it so that the so called “rock stars”(As my manager put it) don’t get overworked to death.

– I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

A definite wake-up call in the real-world for young people.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Best Buy part-time

ProsThere was a great amount of team spirit and effort thwarted everyday to ensure success.
Everyone was friendly and open if help was needed.

ConsManagement was poor.
Some days as a part timer I would only be scheduled to work one week while another part timer had full time hours.
Getting hired on a decent salary amongst a group of new hirees is hard.
Many people do not follow the general dress code.
A lot of leaders would give away discounts and price adjustments for the most absurd reasons.
Leadership, some people excelled while most had "power trips," over their new promotion.

You can coast along and do anything special

Product Manager (Current Employee)
Richfield, MN

I have been working at Best Buy full-time for more than a year

ProsMarket rate pay
Fair amount of talent that is held back from doing special things

ConsDirectors/Sr.Directors are gate keepers who do not allow good things to happen. Also these same folks are entrenched and bide their time until next exec leaves.

Advice to Senior ManagementLet domain experts do their jobs
Say/Do KPI needs to be better
Don't make superfluous claims of changing culture
Fail fast, yeah right...

Good high school job.

Sales Associate (Former Employee)

I worked at Best Buy part-time for more than a year

ProsManagers were usually understanding and easygoing about time off and such. If you like interacting with people, this job is great.

ConsSo corporate. Staff meetings are annoying, as is the ridiculous online training that you have to do before starting.

Big Box Store with High Turnover

Loss Prevention Supervisor (Former Employee)
Westminster, CO

I worked at Best Buy full-time for more than a year

ProsEntry-Level sales and retail experience. Depending on the management of each store, can be beneficial as a stepping stone to better career paths.

ConsLimited ability to move up in the company. Limited personal growth depending on management. Retail job, so interacting with difficult customers at times. Low pay and generally part-time.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop cutting top-paid performers. While this is a short-term cash consideration, the long-term effects never benefit the customer or the company.

A frenzy every day

ECommerce Project Manager (Former Employee)
Richfield, MN

I worked at Best Buy full-time for less than a year

ProsExciting, desired employer, great online retailer, moves quickly to respond to the marketplace

ConsWith the new CEO, Hubert Jolly, taking the reigns, the name dropping started - Hubert is very hands on, and we had to run emergency, frenzied campaigns, simply because "Hubert wants..." Not very planful.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't just pull the trigger - give some thought to what you are asking and do a little more analysis up front. Just because Wal Mart is offering a compelling promo today, try a different approach next week, doing reaction after reaction doesn't bode well to a planful marketing approach.

So so...

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Best Buy part-time

ProsSometimes good discounts, learned better interpersonal skills and thats about it

ConsEverything else, stupid metrics to get more money out of customers, lack of appreciation, and no benefits to make sales as it is not commission based.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop pushing sales associates and expecting them to hit all metrics while we are in a recession.
