18 years as a Big 5 Manager. Long hours, poor pay, not loyal, high turnover.

Store Manager (Former Employee)

I worked at Big 5 full-time for more than 10 years

ProsIf you like sporting goods, you are surrounded by them. Not much other than that.

ConsLong hours, poor pay, not loyal, high turnover. Very low pay especially when you are paying for your own benefits. Store Managers don't even make over 45000 a year. Managers are extremely micro managed, absolutely no say in anything.

Advice to Senior ManagementRegional Manager's are in your store once a year. District Manager's are in your store twice a month. They both micro-manage you through email. Absolutely terrible!!

A terrible customer service and employee treatment environment.

First Assistant Manager (Former Employee)
San Luis Obispo, CA

I worked at Big 5

ProsA good place to learn operations, but they're careful not to reward your performance.

ConsWorst in class pay schedule.

Advice to Senior ManagementYour retention would be great if you didn't think insuring someone's family was the same as paying them.

They are frugal, to put it mildly, and un-supportive of their employees.

Cashier (Former Employee)

I worked at Big 5 part-time

ProsThey're usually hiring, so that's a plus.
The people that work at Big 5 aren't necessarily bad people.

ConsI know some employees that have worked there for over 4 years and have only had a pay raise once. A $0.15 pay raise!
The turnover is ridiculous.

Advice to Senior ManagementCare as much for your employees as you do your customers. Your current business model is not going to take you very far. I'm amazed it has lasted this long.

Don't think, just do as you are told.

Manager Trainee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Big 5

ProsTrying to find some
You do not pay for insurance
If you do not like having to think for yourself, great place.
If you do not know how to spell or do complex math, this job is for you

ConsThe list can go on and on. They only want people to do as they are told without questions.
Ideas and concerns will be over looked.
The more your nose gets brown the better.
Never file a workers claim they will fight you tooth and nail.
God forbid if you make a human error, write ups abound for frivolous reasons.

Advice to Senior ManagementLoose the tie, quit thinking every employee is a thief, stop making rules and policy up as you wish. They even tried to make me clock out to speak with human resources.

depressing place to work :(

Cashier (Current Employee)

I have been working at Big 5

ProsThe only reason i have stayed for these past 2 years would definatly be the people i work with. its an easy job..anyone could do it. The interviewing process at my store wasnt even really what i would consider an interview. You just go in and take a short basic math test and then the manager informed me that i passed and i was hired. No questions whatsoever were asked.

ConsThey inform you when you are hired that you will be eligible for a pay raise every 6 months however, after talking to some of the other employees i learned very quickly that, that was never going to happen..and it didnt..even after 2 and a half years with the company. They barely even train you, so you have no idea what your doing. they might stand next to you and watch you for about 20 mins but then i was all on my own to figure it out. the store that i work at has WAY too many employees than needed, seeing as we are the smallest store in out district, which means that you will get almost no hours. (on average about 8 hrs/week) Everyone that works there is miserable, people dont get rewarded for hard work and the same goes for bad employees...ect. Our manager is a mess half the time and screws up on the schedules. She's hooked up with numerous employees and is just plain unproffesional. maybe its just my store but I would just avoid working here..its easy work but unless you feel like wasting your life away at a place where you will go nowhere then i would avoid it!!

Advice to Senior ManagementThe management needs to reward hardworking employees and punish one's who just do nothing/steal/constantly get complaints from customers. I think if the employees actually got raises and promotions that they would try harder and take a little bit of pride in their work.
