I have been working at Big 5 full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The only Pro is the ability to move between different big 5 locations very easily by submitting a transfer request.

    Cons

Big 5 used to offer things like free benefits and cheap co pays as added benefits for their employees. They now charge an absurd amount for benefits, both medical and dental, and have recently DOUBLED the co pay charge when seeing a Doctor. Monotony and extended long hours with little to NO praise about the hard job you've done should really detour you from a management position with this company. It takes a million horizontal moves before you get one lateral promotion up the chain. The music is also insanely outdated, humdrum and depressing. Update your music and your image to sync with the times already..

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start over. Erase your 1955 thinking and realize why people would kill to work at companies like google and go daddy. Focus again on your employees to receive the most out of them ; its the only way you'll achieve results from them, because let me tell you, 99% of your General Managers are lost in the woods and have no respect from their assistant managers or part timers, especially in Arizona. They are all pigeon-holed in their General Manager positions and do very little to train the assistants underneath them, or even put forth a daily effort.

    Pros

If nothing else it is a paycheck when you have nothing else to go to.

    Cons

terrible neighborhood gang bangers stealing every day, management was horrible they have no people skills and very rude. They hired me as a trainee yet received no training you have to keep bugging them to train you. Terrible work hours and not safe to be at that store late.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire competent management with some people skills and some education.

I have been working at Big 5 full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Health insurance is wonderful, a few hours of overtime each week is pretty good. Overall job is pretty easy except dealing with terrible customers.

    Cons

Getting yelled at everyday by customers, not being able to tell them no when taking back returns, working with employees who hate it and have no work ethic. The hours of operation. No consistent schedule. Not getting days off that you would like for important family events. Not getting to have Thanksgiving or Christmas

Start caring about your employees and stop being fake

    I worked at Big 5

    Pros

There are none, please do not ever work there. You would be better off working at Sports Authority or any other sporting goods store.

    Cons

Innumerable, literally. All employees were treated terribly, being overworked and unequivocally underpaid. You are not trained at all; you are expected to fend for yourself in knowledge and understanding of any said product sold by Big 5 Sporting Goods®‎.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Dear Steven G. Miller,

As C.E.O. of Big 5 Sporting Goods®, a company claimant of over 9,500 employees, it can be understood if there is not always fluidity in the systematic operations of a *multimillion dollar corporation*, though, truly, that is inexcusable when it comes to the management of your employees. First, the pay rate at which, in example, a sales associate receives is laughable at best. You cannot expect an entry level employee to fend for themselves in understanding the products that you sell to try to sell to the public. What needs to be done is a complete overhaul of how you think your company should be run. What you truly need to do is go and actually visit a store, anonymously, to see just how unprofessional and disaster stricken your company is currently in. All your company ever reminded me of was McDonalds, a multibillion dollar conglomerate that easily replaced any one of its employees, because that is just what they are to them, replaceable. What an atrocious and disgusting kind of mentality to have for any one of your employees.

    Pros

If you like sporting goods, you are surrounded by them. Not much other than that.

    Cons

Long hours, poor pay, not loyal, high turnover. Very low pay especially when you are paying for your own benefits. Store Managers don't even make over 45000 a year. Managers are extremely micro managed, absolutely no say in anything.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Regional Manager's are in your store once a year. District Manager's are in your store twice a month. They both micro-manage you through email. Absolutely terrible!!
