I have been working at Big 5

    Pros

I work as a sales associate and a cashier, which gives me lots of opportunities to learn about a lot of cool products that Big5 carries, and I get to use my knowledge to help customers know and find what will best fit their needs. Employees get 10%-20% discounts on purchases. The workplace feels relaxed, but still professional and respectful.

    Cons

All non-management employees are part-time, so we don't get benefits or lots of hours. Working retail hours can be difficult- sometimes closing late or opening early, with a different schedule every week and the store hours changing for holidays and things. There are occasional snippy or rude customers, and the constant music gets to me sometimes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide clearer direction and incentives for employees who may wish to seek management positions. How long do I need to stay with the company before qualifying for promotion? What are the potential benefits and pay increases?

A standard automated, easily distributable scheduling system (i.e. whentowork.com) would save lots of time, money, and stress for scheduling managers and for part-time employees with multiple commitments.

I worked at Big 5 part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Big 5 is one of those companies that gives people that chance that they need to earn some work experience and they are the definition of an energetic work environment that. Not to mention managers are very understanding when an employee needs to take a day off and will rarely ever say no unless need help badly for the day you asked off for.

    Cons

Sometimes can cut hours for odd reasons.

I worked at Big 5 part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Very flexible with hours due to school schedule and other activities. Teaches you how to be responsible and prompt.

    Cons

Doing truck and getting paid just a little more than minimum was a buzz kill.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

For those doing truck days, offer a higher base pay for their work to be compensated.
