I worked at Big Lots part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I got paid $0.25 more than minimum wage.

    Cons

Management was incompetent and unappreciative of extra effort. They didn't use people effectively at all. I was put on the cash register very rarely, and there was one month that I got more Buzz Club sign-ups than the rest of the cashiers COMBINED, and they still only rarely put me on the register.

I have been working at Big Lots part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Definitely room to grow with promotions offered often within the company. Management can be flexible with time off and scheduling needs.

    Cons

Corporate level doesn't communicate or necessarily care what their employees have to say, open all holidays. Lack of hiring, small number of employees are asked to do the job of multiple. Unfair/unsafe work enviornment

I have been working at Big Lots full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Some of the people are fun to work with. Benefits are good insurance wise.

    Cons

Required 45 hours minimum. Schedule is all over the place between day and overnight shifts. say good bye to any kind of sleep schedule and outside activities that have a set time or date. Workload is ridiculously high. Shipments are not at all thought through. Receive random amounts of freight regardless of what might already be on the shelves but at the same time you are expected to get it all out on time every time. Not enough payroll for expected tasks and customer satisfaction demands. Was happy when first started, but over time have really started to become unhappy with work and life outside of work since work seems to take up all my time an energy. Have changed as a person because of it and not in a good way.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Store Managers should step up and help out more instead of putting everything on the assistants. establish better more organized shipping process based on the stores size and capabilities. Don't cram as much product as you can into a store by sending too much then bash them for not getting all the freight out. Don't burn out employees to the point where they don't enjoy coming to work.

I worked at Big Lots full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

weekly paycheck could be better if people never cheated on the incentive program but at least you get a check every week this is the only pro I can think of

    Cons

heavy lifting for men only because with my 15 years working in the Columbus warehouse I never seen women lift heavy merchandise , & I'm not saying they can't' its just skipped for the men to do , it would be nice if the women would do equal work and have bad backs as well !and the all male supervisors will not say anything about this problem if everyone has the the same job position they should work the same work load even Steven same pay same material should be handled . And the inventive program is hell on earth ! It causes certain employees to skip items of bulk and weight and skip to smaller lighter work loads to increase their production , in other words they cheat to get higher carton counts! Leaving the heavy bulky merchandise to others causing their production to go down and make them look bad ! And the supervisors hear about this and do nothing at all but write you up for having low carton counts ! They need to drop that incentive program it causes a lot of back stabbing and make the real hard workers look bad! Another bad thing about this place is they work you to death in the first 3 days of the week and drop the hours in half the rest of the week or there is no work on Friday so you can't get 40 hours in its ridiculous ! The supervisors are never around , who knows where they go all day they show up at the end of the shift to log out the locations computers and that's all you see of them , I mean what if you have a problem ? Maintenance is always in the break room , if somethings broke down it hurts that departments production . If its 90 degrees out side prepare to suffer the building has no proper ventilation and its hard to breath in there when its that hot out it will be 100+ inside . So if you want to work in a place who's employees skip heavy merchandise and save it all for you while they work on tissues all day and you sweat your butt off killing yourself with bad equipment that Wont stay working because of the lack of maintenance and no supervision THAN THIS JOBS FOR YOU....

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

drop the incentive program it causes nothing but cheating and back stabbing , and puts a strain on the good workers who's left with working on the heavy undesirable merchandise

I have been working at Big Lots part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Discount
    20 percent off
    can move around
    do different things
take longer breaks than 15 minutes
    walk around
    lots of smoke breaks

    Cons

Manager threaten to kill me once he left I told management and they did nothing. Paper work they advertise no unions feel free to talk to management then store manager takes the guy who threatened to kill me more then once promise to no charge no one would miss me store manager takes his side then you have to leave notes for anyone higher up and either they don't see them or don't care because I quote here "he's gone there's nothing we can do now." That is butt covering 100 he still works for the company so there is always something you can do. If you can help it do not work or shop here they are mean threatening don't do anything to help you take days off and new system doesn't even recognize it and you get yelled out prices are high for crappy items. Don't go here don't work here the pro list was hard for me. I've done my job you have been warned.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to bottom people we know whats going on not the store management who only shows you little bit. Actually talk to us read your notes get off your behind and do something.
