I have been working at Big Lots full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Love how different and diverse the merchandise is. I have had so many different foods from around the country and around the world, just by shopping there. Love, Love Love the discount. The pay is good, the hours are good. the people I work with is good.

    Cons

I do miss all the great training I received from my former employer. I don't get much training from Big lots. Its all work no play. But that is how it is for me and my team. High volume store.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Train your staff. TBT is getting better, but we are missing out on a lot of knowledge. Add just a couple of full time associates to the staff. focus un furniture. Staff it better. If you are open, you need a trained associate in furniture at all times. Not just a cross trained cashier. Not a cross trained recovery associate. A dedicated furniture team.

I have been working at Big Lots full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Various merchandising capacity and able to do some things for what your store needs are.
Good work-life balance if you train and delegate to staff while holding accountable. (Inspect what you expect)
Good salary comparable to other same type retailers.
20% off everything for employees every day with 30% off 3 weekends a year.

    Cons

Training has improved but still not at level it should be.
Company values are good but could focus more on better alignment of store layouts.
    Not a AD everyweek.
Reward program needs to be updated as it can not be explained to customers what causes them to get a reward and email is only way to get coupon, should be able to alert at register and cashier have the ability to ask customer if they wish to use at the time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on a intensive IT upgrade for the company and add store manager email as a additional email contact at store where every one over entry level can not access.
In addition add access to check the email from another store or personal computer and some form of office type upgrades, (Excel, Outlook, etc.)

I worked at Big Lots full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Enjoyed the fast pace and constant change of merchandise. Company is making alot of positive changes in merchandise assortment, store standards and customer service.

    Cons

Not enough payroll allocated to ensure the level of customer service that is expected. The amount of merchandise that stores are expected to receive and plan for is usually not correct so it's hard to execute the merchandising process and stay within the payroll budget.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you are not a "hands on" manager this is not for you.

    Cons

To much micromanagement no room for self expression, not interested in ideas from store level.

Slow to react to hiring needs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I have been working at Big Lots full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The most alluring aspect is freedom to merchandise. The satisfaction of creating something and having it result in sales increases is outstanding. There is motivation in the internal competitions of providing the 'best' a store can. A lot of potential for good raises also. With a good crew it is very easy to remain devoted.

    Cons

Hours given versus expectations are vastly different. One person is often tasked with a myriad of distracting jobs that conflict with the shift in focus from stock to the customer. Information is not communicated appropriately down the ranks. Beginning management position is disregarded and untrained. Constant incoming freight becomes monotonous.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would like to see better communication overall, as well as a more organized distributing center and better organization and time for tasks sent down.
