    Pros

Products make major positive difference in patient's lives. Reverse commute from SF and East Bay. Opportunities to grow in your career if you have the right manager. Competitive benefits. Start up mentality with plenty of latitude for those who want to push the boundaries of professional appearance and behavior. Great opportunities for consultants and contractors.

    Cons

Unrealistic timelines and expectations; this is a problem for workers and potentially a problem for patients. Currently lacking some systems which are necessary for sustained success in the biotech industry. Start up mentality with plenty of latitude for those who want to push the boundaries of professional appearance and behavior. Turn over rate is problematic.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay attention to the turn over rate and investigate root cause.
Inability to manage resource loading will continue to hinder the organization as it continues to grow.
Avoid becoming like Johnson and Johnson (Alza). Be more like Genentech.

    Pros

Opportunities to wear multiple hats and lots of responsibility

    Cons

Not much support, long commute, no work life balance, more work than employees can handle leading to burn out. Does not recognize or reward hard workers and tend to promote those who talk a lot.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward those to helped get this company where it's at and stop with the trend of downsizing or removing employee benefits.

    Pros

    Great salary and benefits.

    Cons

C- and VP- level management is great. Below that, it's hit or miss. Very director-heavy. Little promotion from within.

A Great Place To Work. Just Don't Do It In Clin Ops!

    Pros

    1. The best thing about working for BMRN was the benefits package! They actually pay your yearly health insurance premiums.
    2. Second best would be their employees, management excluded. I can and will only give feedback on BMRN's Clinical Operations Department, as it was the only department that I worked in. BMRN's CRAs are the best, most knowledgeable, and hardest working associates in the business. They are dedicated employees who work very hard because they respect their profession and really feel that they are making a difference in other people's lives.
    3. JJ. JJ Bienaime is the best thing to have happened to BMRN. With him as CEO, it really boosted morale, and gave BMRN the confidence the company definitely was missing.

    Cons

One of the major downsides of working in Clinical is definitely the senior management. The Senior Director, an MBA, lacks basic communication as well as people skills! I can't decide if this individual is afraid of people, or if this person just doesn't know how to relate to others. The AD is very mediocre, bordering incompetent. This person enjoys busy work, and happily assigns it others as well. A complete lack of vision and confidence is pretty dangerous for a biotech company that is often compared to Genentech in the early years.

I believe it is important for a company to advance their own employees through promotion. However, there is great disservice when individuals are promoted just to fill a vacancy. This disrupts working relationships and balance. What is apparent is that it's very hard for BMRN to attract excellent talent because there are so many biotech companies in the Bay Area. Not too many are willing to make that commute across the bridge(s) to get to Marin to work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would say to the VPs of BMRN to take a very close look at the management of the Clinical Operations Department. The turnover rate is too high. People don't leave companies. They leave managers.

A growing company with growing pains

    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

Fast growing company with good future prospects, the stock options are apealing. Free bagels on ednesdays and free lunch on fridays are a good perk.

    Cons

Some areas of the company arent adapting well to becoming a larger organization. Many employees are being overworked due to poor resrouce planning.

    Positive Outlook
