Review Highlights

Pros
  • Excellent work environment, very open line of communication with superiors (in 7 reviews)

  • There are a great deal of developers here with their own families, so the work/life balance is admirable (in 4 reviews)

Cons
  • Unfortunately the gaming industry sees a lot of change from time to time, due to natural restructuring post lauch (in 8 reviews)

  • This creates a very distinct caste system between the "have's" (the full time employees) and the "have not's" (the contract workers) (in 4 reviews)

    I worked at BioWare

    Pros

This company used to be stellar. Made great software. Now it dumps quality everywhere it can in order to suit EA. The brand is tarnished, and I recommend everyone to stay away.

    Cons

Working for a company that used to represent gamers, now it's just a shell. "Freemium" model is just a BS as it sounds. It consists of hooking gamers with something well programmed and free, and suckering them to pay for something expensive and buggy. Don't waste your time or money.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

EA is a vampire. Now that they've got hold of Bioware, there's nothing that can save it now.

I worked at BioWare as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

Some of the people working in the Austin office are talented. There is a nice cafeteria within walking distance from the office.

    Cons

Most of the people working for BioWare are immature and untalented. Upper management is crass, loutish, arrogant, and mean. Contractors are treated like toilet paper (and about half of the work force is composed of contractors). There are few older employees. Those few are treated with disrespect bordering on harassment. Employees are harassed about their weight. Bioware is one of the worst places I have worked.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go out of business. I'm not kidding. You stink to high heaven. You don't know how to treat human beings.

    I worked at BioWare

    Pros

A lot going on day to day. A lot of work but mostly because the servers keep getting screwed up.

    Cons

    - Lack of management
    - Poor communication from team leads
    - Constant changes in development plans without warning
    - Management placed in some groups do not have the required skills to make their teams successful
    - No interaction with management unless you initiate it.
    - You must have a previous connection with someone on the inside in order to solidify your position.
    - A lot of egos and attitude from the creative higher-ups like they're God's gift to the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Learn the strengths of your employees
    - Talk to them and discover what drives their productivity
    - Be a mentor and develop them instead of making them "factory" workers.

    I worked at BioWare

    Pros

Free breakfast every morning. Free tacos on Fridays. A chance to work with some amazingly talented and creative people.

    Cons

Over two-thirds of the employees are contract workers. This creates a very distinct caste system between the "have's" (the full time employees) and the "have not's" (the contract workers). There is an unspoken implication that if a contractor works hard enough that they will be offered a full time position, but often this isn't the case. Who gets hired and who doesn't is incredibly arbitrary. Also, there is an expectation that the employee will sacrifice their lives and the lives of their families to work whatever overtime hours the supervisors demand. One "crunch" period consisted of 12 straight days of work. 7 of those 12 were 12 HOUR days. The overtime was mandatory and contract employees were fired if they did not comply with these demands.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not treat the contract employees as if they are juvenile delinquents in a boarding school. Be more sympathetic to work/life balance issues. You're making a GAME, not curing cancer.

I worked at BioWare full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Portions of the development teams do incredibly exciting things. Small portions of what made this company great still remain. If you get attached to one of these parts of the organization you will have an amazing experience.

A reasonable amount of free beer.

About the only option if you want to work somewhere exciting and live in Edmonton.

    Cons

...the rest of the company is a bloated ineffective organization plagued by immature behaviors and a lack of big picture thinking. Personal agendas run wild, with the kind of backstabbing you'd expect from an all girls high school. People who try to assess/address/improve the situation are singled out and persecuted, and their turnover is high - almost all of them moving on to better companies. My departure from the company was one of the most unprofessional and inhuman experiences I've had. I am shocked to see the gap between what they profess as values and how they conduct themselves in person.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You profess humility. Perhaps learn what it means.
