I worked at Biogen Idec full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great science and pipeline. Lots of opportunity to move across the organization and gain experience. Solid Executive leadership team. Stable and cash rich.

    Cons

Work life balance is often compromised. Long hours and 24/7 culture. Taking time off is an act of courage at times. Not nimble anymore, lots of layers and pockets of big Pharma shark culture.

    Advice to Management

Watch culture change closely. Culture of fear can deter from focus at work when constantly checking over your shoulder Open space is distracting.

I have been working at Biogen Idec full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The benefits are good. Paid time off is good. Work From Home is great if you ever get the opportunity.

    Cons

They micro manage you in every sense of the term. It's almost like you're in school. Feel under appreciated by upper management. They have no clue what we do. You can complain & voice your concerns but it falls on deaf ears. & sometimes it may even lead to you gettinf fired if you go against the norm. & it's clear they simply don't care.

    Advice to Management

LISTEN. not just hear the employees.... LISTEN. & take action on the things that are reasonable. Show appreciate for what the employees do. & keep the lines of communication as clear as possible.

    Pros

Company has great vision and a passion to truly help the MS population. Pay was awesome and the benefits were hard to beat.

    Cons

Micro-mgmt was the worst. Also, leadership always asks for feedback but rarely ever took it into consideration. Patient services did not have as much growth as other divisions within the company.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the people who DO the job. Take their advice seriously and not just for formality.

I have been working at Biogen Idec as a contractor

    Pros

Highly active with multiple initiatives going at the same time, all the time, with interesting work.

    Cons

Highly political. Decisions, or commitment level to work, is often driven by fear of what might happen and/or who might get upset.

    Advice to Management

Take more interest in what your teammates are doing, encourage them to not fear contrary opinions, and provide acknowledgment.

I have been working at Biogen Idec as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great company culture in terms of work/life balance and amenities. Contractors are treated like regular employees.

    Cons

Conversion rate from contractor to full time is long and slow. Management has their favorites. Everyone has their duty and assigned place and there is no straying from it to grow in your career path.

    Pros

Not so friendly environment. It's just that you do your work, get paid, go home, then come back the next day to repeat this cycle.

    Advice to Management

Take a (little) personal interest in your employees.
