I worked at Biogen Idec full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Good benefits. Recent stock increase is major benefit to those that have been there for a while. Decent pay. Overall really talented group of people working there.

Huge benefit if you are a scientist as this is one of the top Biotechs in the industry.

Overall the drugs the company makes have a huge benefit to the patients that take them. That is the best motivator is that the company's product has a positive impact in the lives of many people with MS and other debilitating diseases.

    Cons

IT went through massive layoffs and then we were all expected to do the same jobs, fill in all of the gaps and get paid the same. Overall not a very effective approach, except to the bottom line, which is what the overall focus is and will continue to be.
Also if you are not best buddies with upper management your chance for promotion is extremely limited in your area. Promotion, at least in IT, was rarely merit based.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If management really wants to move from a "Command and Control" mentality to having committed, dedicated employees, then make positions and promotions merit based and not based on past relationships at former companies.
The obvious focus is the bottom line and stock holders of upper management. Call a spade a spade and just say that...almost every other company in the world does.

I worked at Biogen Idec full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

A very educational learning experience. I loved working here & would gladly go back agai
Great training provided; my manager was fantastic & taught me so much about the industry. Very efficient company specific software that aids tremendously in being successful at the job.

    Cons

Team spirit at the company wasn't that great. I also felt there was a good group of unfriendly people, primarily upper management, who could be a bit drab on the office environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think you need to get more pleasantries out of those people who can't even offer a smile or reciprocate that "good morning" or "hello" when said to them.

    Pros

Developing new treatments for debilitating diseases. Emphasis on work/life balance. Excellent pay and benefits for employees. Contractors are treated well.

    Cons

People are stretched very thin. Until the end of 2013 I wouldn't have had anything really negative to say, then Contractors (of which I was one) were blindly let go at the end of the year with no plans for how the work was going to get done.

    Great place to work

Former Employee - Associate Scientist II in Cambridge, MA

I worked at Biogen Idec as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

Good pay and benefits, great people to work with, on-site cafeteria, cambridge location, company happy hour!

    Cons

Big-pharma kind of atmosphere can put limits on your role and scope for growth. Hiring can be very convoluted, some upper level management might be a little out of touch with the times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Leave some flexibility in roles so that employees can pursue their own growth.

    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

I worked at Biogen Idec full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Benefits, work/life balance initiatives, internal movement to higher positions or new areas, bonus, great co-workers, ability to work at other sites - including International transfers to learn and grow at the company.

    Cons

There are some bad managers and there is a lack from HR or upper management to address concerns brought up seriously and without retaliation from the manager, the stock program changed where there was no longer a real long term incentive to stay with the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to those bring issues to HR and Sr. Managers about mistreatment, discrimination and bullying. It takes a lot for some people to take those steps and to tell them to address it directly with the manager, who is mistreating direct reports, do not allow for any change or to address the situation. Moving a bad manager to a new department is also not the solution either.
