Current Employee - Anonymous Employee in Research Triangle Park, NC

    Pros

Company mission is about improving life for neurology and hemophilia patients.
Compensation is good. Insurance is good.
Spending money for buildings and upgrades.
Let you have the tools (software, training etc.) to be successful.
Some good leaders, but... (see cons)
CEO who does not grandstand, but transparently states the facts and the vision.

    Cons

Drama, heroics, and chest thumping are values.
Culture requires blowing sunshine at all times.
Frowned upon to ask about factual data underlying a pretty PowerPoint slide.
A good individual contributor does not always make a good manager or director.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Thank you for the internal surveys. Some have acted on the results. Some have not. Pay attention to the weak spots and shuffle leadership. A little change is always good for the org. Challenge more happy news with probing questions. Require all associates to see patient advocate presentations. Some focus has been lost celebrating the stock growth.

    Pros

Benefits, pay (competitive), work life balance (improving with some departments offering greater flexibility than others)

    Cons

Lack of diversity in management (mid-level & senior). Promotions are far between ((avg 3-5 years) and based more on time served vs consistent high performance and demonstrated performance at the next level.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Diversify management by tapping into key internal high performing talent that have demonstrated leadership capabilities.

    Pros

-Great flexibility with project selection/progression and involvement with different scientists.
-My co-mentors were always supportive, helpful and wanted me to learn new techniques and experiments
-Since Cambridge is the company's main R&D site, there were lots of fellow interns (~30) and therefore many intern-specific events and fun activities

    Cons

-A major R&D reorganization that resulted in firing of 1/3 of a department. Projects and people were getting shifted around a lot after that.

    Pros

Being a contractor at my previous company was not a good experience. However, compared to my last contract assignment, being a contractor at Biogen Idec as been a great experience. The group that I'm assigned to has really been great to work with. My manager has been flexible with my work hours. And it does seem like Biogen Idec takes care of it's permanent employees.

    Cons

I have heard other employees mumble about seniority does not matter here, especially if you're a little outspoken.
