Current Employee – been working at Black Hills full-time for more than 8 years
Pros – Good matching (401K), Nice people (co workers), Ok benefits and descent salary (for the mid-west)
Cons – Upper management is always looking out for the shareholders first and foremost. They talk a good game about better working conditions, safety etc... but when it comes down to putting out the $ its not so important then. I feel this company is one good cost cut away from a major safety issue or disaster.
Advice to Senior Management – Hire some employees, get up to date with technology and systems. Get a better IT department and fund them to bring us into the 21st century, make an effort to talk to and understand lower managements needs and employees needs, we do a good job for you.

Current Employee – been working at Black Hills
Pros – 401K benefits are very good.
Co-Workers are excellent
Cons – Managers expect you to work 50+ hours a week. If you don't work excessive hours then don't ever expect an excellent review or a promotion.
Good ol' boy network with very few woman and/or minorities in the department.
Advice to Senior Management – Try having a life so your employees can as well.

Former Employee – worked at Black Hills
Pros – The salary and benefits are very competitive, and are actually better than most companies are. Good percent matching to 401K; good profit sharing plan; good health insurance.
Cons – Management (in IT) does not communicate well at all.
No training opportunities despite the opposite being referenced on its corporate and career websites.
No employee recognition and no team building processes.
The call center (customer service department) was also a low priority to management so there systems and processes are behind the curve in technology and ability.
Corporate management thinks that shareholder value is the absolute most important above all else (including quality customer service).
This is still a "good, ole boy company" and has not advanced along with 21st century ideologies; in other words, getting a corner office is more important than doing quality work and providing top-notch customer service.
Advice to Senior Management – Diversify your management in executive and in IT to bring in modern skills sets and abilities. In addition, the effort placed on "corporate diversity" is laughable at best, and actually borders on incompetent. I recommend bringing in a (proven) outside consulting firm to assist the company in learning how to move into the 21st century, and realize that energy based on coal is not the only path forward.
