    Pros

The work atmosphere is pretty good, and collegues in general are pretty enjoyable. They are beggining to use innovative software to continue efficiency in the near future, which will make the job easier to learn in the future. Alot of excel work. Great work life balance, no evenings or weekends.

    Cons

After you learn your responsibilities, the job is repetitive. Not much team interaction on a face to face basis. Everything is done through e-mail and IM.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Tune up the training period.

    Solid Company to work for.

I have been working at Black & Veatch full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Black & Veatch is a well established engineering company. Their brand is based on providing high quality projects. I've worked there for 16 years in the Energy Division. B&V has good pay, a good bonus program and a good stock ownership program. They have a wide variety of technical specialists with extensive experience in many areas. Their health care is costly compared to other firms, but is a full service package. B&V Energy has a group dedicated to training, although like any firm, they struggle some with the delivery of technical training. The people are friendly, and generally concerned about doing the right thing for our projects and our clients. Management seems to care about employee concerns. B&V is a global organization- with many opportunities for multi-cultural experiences. They execute a wide variety of project work in multiple industries.

    Cons

B&V is a large company with a bureaucracy that can be difficult to navigate. They have very experienced managers. However growth beyond the engineering discipline can be difficult due to the number of managers already in place. Career growth is available within the engineering disciplines. There is a tendency to pigeon hole individuals once they have demonstrated competence in a single area.
They emphasize training- but have a training delivery problem in that they aren't able to devote the resources required to formally publish and distribute key technical training. They are working to improve this.
They tend not to drive career growth- but expect employees to drive the growth themselves. This works ok- but can be really difficult when tranisioning between business lines or divisions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide more opportunities for growth outside of one's specialty.
Recognize and reward good performance with added responsability.
Provide the necessary investment to improve training delivery mechanisms.

I have been working at Black & Veatch full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Great professionals, very knowledgeable people, lots of opportunity to engage in multiple roles, semi-ease of transfering between internal business units and within busiiness unit groups. Great culture and value system.

    Cons

Limited room to grow into full manangement positions due to an already top-heavy management. can be difficult to switch between business units or between groups in the same unit. Not as flexible and adaptable to today's working culture expectations in terms of compensation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more flexible in allowing professionals move around from and between groups, it will allow for a more diverse workforce which increases flexibility and minimizes sudden gaps during normal yearly employee turnovers. Maybe due to being so top heavy, compensation down the food chain is pretty low compared to its peers in the industry.
