Competitive with Industry Standards... Mostly

Civil Engineer II (Current Employee)
Overland Park, KS

I have been working at Black & Veatch full-time for more than 3 years

ProsSome of the benefits.
Flexibility of work hours.

ConsThe benefits are not consistent across the board for all job families. Even though B&V is employee owned, employee's are not eligible for the annual incentive plan (AIP) until they reach a certain job level, unlike the employee owned competition. Many job titles/levels have limited sick leave but others do not.
Business casual work attire is ok, but it would be better if we were allowed to "dress for your day" so those who actually have meeting with management or clients can come in business wear as needed and those of us who never have higher level meetings can come to work and be comfortable.
The technology, work station equipment, and everything else that should make your job easier is always behind.
The Telecom division does not offer the 9/80 schedule and is slow to "roll over" their contract professionals to be core employees.
Professionals are expected to provide their own PPE's that are required beyond a hard hat, ear plugs, a reflective vest, and basic safety glasses (i.e. boots and prescription safety glasses are your out-of-pocket responsibility).
Employee-owned, but you only get the perks if you are at or above a certain job level.
They are slow to adjust your job title when you reach experience milestones (like obtaining your P.E. license or after so many years on the job). Which in turn affects your eligibility for the AIP.
The performance review process is a joke. You pick who you solicit feedback from, so of course everyone will pick friends who will give them a good review. Then, to top it off, no matter what anyone says about you or how well you do the work, it's virtually impossible to receive a "1" rating (out of 3). It's more about who you know. This makes it hard for people to want to be the best they can be since they will never be rewarded for their hard work at the end of the year. It's like B&V strives for being... mediocre.
The Telecom division department heads do not allow uncompensated personal time unless there are extreme conditions and you have already used your vacation time, even if the work load at the time is slow.
You are expected to train yourself.

Advice to Senior ManagementDo not say we are "competitive with industry standards" unless you are willing to back up that claim with specific examples about where we stand vs. what our competition offers.
Show some goodwill and at least make a counter offer to the stellar employees who are leaving for other companies. We've lost several key team members who would have stayed if B&V had actually been "competitive with industry standards."
Take the time and make resources available to actually invest in training both new and experienced professionals.

The Institution

Administrative Assistant (Current Employee)
Kansas City, MO

I have been working at Black & Veatch full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGood place to work if your in IT or an engineer....only

ConsIt's referred for years/decades as the Institution for a reason. They encourage you to think "out side the box" but DON'T YOU DARE! Walk the line like everyone else does and smile. Horrible place to work if you have a brain and decide to use it. A good place to start and have on your resume but don't stay too long.

Advice to Senior ManagementEmbrace change, it's NOT a bad thing.

Frustrating

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Cerritos, CA

I worked at Black & Veatch full-time for more than a year

ProsThere were some really good people that worked there whom dedicated many, many hours to build a client base and grow the wireless division at the California office. The large company, stability, and employee incentives attracted a lot of talent.

ConsThe headquarters in Kansas did not understand the strict and complicated California permitting requirements, which lead to severe inefficiency for the local office to meet and exceed deadlines, causing substantially more work for staff whom were already overworked. In addition the Los Angeles office practiced extreme favoritism which eventually lead to many talented people leaving the company as they had no upward mobility.

Advice to Senior ManagementWork with the local offices to implement region specific and industry specific processes and requirements instead of a blanket standard process which create unnecessary work that staff will have to address which takes time and energy away from their jobs and production. As for the favoritism in the Los Angeles office, they know about it so they obviously made a decision not to do anything about it.

Overall bizarre experience

Civil Engineer (Current Employee)
Overland Park, KS

I have been working at Black & Veatch full-time for more than a year

ProsI worked with a lot of great people and learned more than I imagined I would. 9/80 schedule gives you every other Friday off. The atmosphere was generally relaxed.

ConsRaises were standard 3.5% regardless of performance. The performance rating program was very odd. You either get a 1, 2 or 3 based on your performance. However, they have a forced distribution, so management is required to assign a certain number of each rating. This results in 1's being 2's and 2's being 3's. Very bizarre. Management is very quick to drop the axe on its employees. Tons of managers that aren't very good.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet to know your staff. When you are forced to assign a number, it may be easier if you actually know your staff's capabilities.

Telecommunications

Manager (Former Employee)
Cerritos, CA

I worked at Black & Veatch full-time for more than a year

ProsGreat local team with a lot of industry experience. They hire great local people.

ConsSite Development and Construction teams are separate and do not work together well. The company encourages this dysfunctional setup. Most strategic decisions are made in corporate office in Kansas City. There is almost no telecommunications experience in Kansas City and this is obvious to the customer.

Advice to Senior ManagementSupport the local offices better, they are the ones in front of the customer. The purpose of this business is support of the customer not support of the corporate office.

Knowledge is Power

Civil Engineer (Current Employee)
Overland Park, KS

I have been working at Black & Veatch full-time for more than 5 years

ProsHQ is located in nice area that has many popular shops and good neighborhoods nearby. Some positions allow for world travel. Black & Veatch does offer continuing education (partial) reimbursement for those who want to go back to earn a higher degree.

ConsThe Black & Veatch benefit package is very basic. The pay for new grads and experienced engineers is overall low to medium unless you work in a hard-to-fill position. Overal work environment at HQ tends to be poor to very poor. Black & Veatch culture is extremely political, which tends to benefit those who talk-the-talk but know/do very little.

Advice to Senior ManagementTreat your professionals as if they matter; they are your most important resource. Reinstate employee programs like the PeopleFirst program that was abandoned so long ago. Respect and dignity go a long way in creating a good work environment. B&V can be great again!

Pros & Cons

Electrical Engineer III (Former Employee)
Overland Park, KS

I worked at Black & Veatch

ProsGood company for the beginners. Lots of resources and tools for initial learning.

ConsSome of the supervisors are simply disgusting and old fashioned. Make things complicated.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt is time to share the profit with all employees. Actions speak louder than words. You are greedy and do not care for the young employees. You need to review your own performance.
